Shocks and compatibility
« on: March 21, 2021, 05:19:49 PM »
I know close to nothing about suspension. If i just measure the bolt hole distances and size/thread etc, can i replace the rears with anything that matches?

would you have any recommendations for a ‘96 cali?

i imagine it’s like the oil debate regarding preload/gas/what-have/you

NO!
It needs to be designed for your bike and you.  Spring rate and damping.  Your weight, passenger, and luggage.
Many aftermarket shock makers have design info on their website. That is, you give them your bike info and your weight info and they will make recommendations.

I agree with TKelly.  Ikon are good, you can pay a lot more, and likely get a higher spec shock, but on a 96 cal do you really need to?  New Ikon shocks will be a big upgrade from stock.

Bitubo is another option https://www.bitubo.com/Bitubo/cms/ENG/#

I looked on their website and went to”find your motorbike “ it said they didn’t have anything. Probly have to find a generic listing and go from there.

Sportster shocks work.  The larger twin had chrome covers that I cut off with a Dremel.  Works fine or so I've heard.
