98EV Tire ScrewUp
« on: May 22, 2021, 01:23:40 PM »
Regina and I ride duplicate 98 EVs.  Since new we have been using Bridgestone BT45 tires.  She uses a slightly smaller profile front to help with lowering.  Planning a big tour in June and need new tires all around.  Bridgestone has dropped the BT45 and now call it BT46.  For some reason they have dropped the smaller profile front that Regina uses and also dropped the appropriate rear size.  What to do?  I opted to change to Shinko.  Ordered all four from my local shop.  Fronts arrived quick and are now installed.  Rears were on back order.  Now I'm notified that the rear back order is extended to JULY!  So much for our June tour.

I need some recommendations for what rear tire brand and size other's are using for this version Guzzi.  I think stock is 140/17.  Shinko was selling 130/17.  What to do now?  Only a few weeks to sort this out.  Please advise.

Just find an the appropriate size in a similar type of tire , mixing brands is highly unlikely to cause a problem . Or try a different source for the Shinko .

Twice the price. People using Shinko rate them well

Get the shin kid, take tour, enjoy, when you get back then get the other tires. No worries.

My money is on the Dunlop 404 outlasting the Shinko for close to the same price.

Not in my experience , the reason I went to Shinko was because the 404's are awful , and the Avons that are glued to the pavement don't last .

I normally prefer to support my local shop.  But this delay was too long and I already had the Shinko fronts mounted and didn't want to mix tires.  Found two rears on the Internet at JP.  Local shop already agreed to refund my original purchase.  So, a few days for delivery and we should be good to go for the tour.
Thanks all for advice.

I have no issue mixing tars. I mean personally I have the extremes of a TKC80 knobby tire on the front and a Archellies Economist  passenger car tar on the rear and lived to tell the tale.

I'd have found a tar that was readily available in the size required in a close tread pattern and ran with it.
