[NGC] Jawa TS350 clutch
« on: October 14, 2015, 05:48:25 AM »
Hi all,  I use a Jawa TS350 (Model 638) for a local runabout and it suffers for a randomly "grabby" clutch.
This is a well documented problem with the model 638 for which I have not found any solution.
I have tried all the obvious things, new plates, cleaning the plates and all the clutch components have been changed at some point during my ownership.  I have also tried a range of gearbox/clutch lubricants ranging from ATF through engine oils straight 30w and multigrades 10/40.  Nothing has made any difference.  The clutch grabs on take off on a random basis which make the ride more rodeo than moto.  Kinda nasty when pulling out at junctions!

I have considered trying Redline shockproof heavy but think the particulate content may simply make a clutch slip.
What do you guys think?  Any ideas?

Sorry , Jawa MCs are unfamiliar to me , and probably most of us . Does it have a conventional multi plate clutch running in an oil bath ? Maybe a change of friction material , or removing a plate might help .

Hmm , what type of pressure plate , stamped , cast ? Does the problem only occur under certain conditions ?

That's even a bit out of my area of expertise. I've always wanted a Jawa 350 twin to play with, but so far haven't found one.

Two things I would consider: 1) condition of the clutch cable - have you lubed it? Make sure that it's routed so that there are no sharps bends. Check the inner wire for frayed strands that might be catching. 2) the clutch release mechanism - is it well lubricated and properly adjusted? After looking at the shop manual, I'd pay particular attention to the "semi automatic clutch disengagement set". If that was sticking or out of adjustment, it could cause the problem you describe. Section 1.8 and 1.9 in the shop manual.

How are the cable, lever and whatever actuator on the engine end?  Not hanging up and well oiled?

A buddy had one of these in high school back in the '70s.  Neat bike.  Everyone else had RDs or dirt bikes.  We called the Jawa the Czecho-slow-vakian.  My buddy ended up breaking off the shifter / kickstarter shaft one day when the bike was out of gas.

I like them.

Oops.  Where'd the seat go?  Bushwhacking on a Jawa.

I had a 350 Californian model for a while.

Never had a clutch issue though so I'm afraid I can't be of much help either.
