Above link to several photos of the XKE engine.  The beauty of these cars was way more than skin deep.  Six individual headers, three sidedraft SU carburettors, DOHC inline 6.

EDIT:  Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the basic engine that powered the older XK120/140/150 was much the same as the XKE engine.

As I recall, the front end styling really suffered when the USA Dept of Trans demanded the Jag be equipped with 5mph bumpers.

The same basic engine was fitted to different models from 1948 until the early '90s.
