I put my cell phone number in the ad , ask them not to text , and leave no email info . Lots of photos . Mention cash .

Troy- I just now posted about my experience with BUYING a Norge off C/L.  My experience was totally the opposite of yours, talk about lucky!!!!  I asked the seller if he had other offers on the bike and he admitted having several scammers.
You are correct, C/L does seem to bring the worms to the surface. The last bike I sold on C/L brought out offers to "help sell my bike", as well as ridiculous low ball offers before they even asked to inspect the bike.

The bogus responses I'm getting from a Craigslist ad I'm running now are mainly trying to get me to get a VIN report from a site the scammer specifies.  One was a real VIN report site that the scammer gets a commission for referrals to, and the other was a completely fake VIN report site that looked like was set up to collect credit card numbers.

When the 2nd guy asked if I had a VIN report, I could see it was leading up to the scam, so I replied "No, but with smart phones today, you can easily get one when you come to look at the bike."  Of course he gave me reasons why I needed to do it before he came, so I quit responding.

I sell a lot of stuff on CL and you quickly get used to which ones are scammers vs. the real buyers. You're right, when they call it an "item on CL", you know it's a robot contacting you, then I also get text messages from an email address (no idea how they do that) asking me to email a different address... scam. The VIN report is yet another scam, plus the common "I will send you a check and only pick up the item after it has cleared" scam. Overall, CL is a great way to sell and buy things once you are actually dealing with a decent human being.

My seller advised he had the same scam ref the VID Report.  Guy even called back a second time.  If first you not succeed, try try again.

Get even with your x or worst enemy.  Run an add with their phone number on it.  Make it too good to be true.

I wouldn't do it, but I know there are people out there that would.  I like not doing anything and make them wonder.

Troy , remember when the Little Rock newspaper had free classifieds on Thursday and there would be hundreds of bikes for sale across the state ? I bought and sold bikes using those free classifieds , and we saw the same craziness stemming from that method. Had a '68 500 CC Triumph Daytona for sale , fresh motor and drivetrain , original paint in good condition , in other words a nice rider ready to go . The ad conveyed these details , and a firm price of $1,900 .00 , no trades. Calls start coming in about 7:30 AM , one guy asks if I would be interested in a couple of weekends with his wife in trade

It's not just craigslist.  I listed for a shipper to haul the hydro engine back to Seattle on uship and got the same stuff -- vague references to my "item" to ship, very vague responses to questions regarding pickup/delivery/cost, and some completely stupid bids ranging from $299 ("broker" without the ability to tell me where the pickup or delivery points were -- only committed to "warehouse up to 30 miles from location" to $1750 from a legit company that didn't 'get it' when I explained that a 150# used engine is not EVER moving ANYWHERE at that price ("thank you, NO! when I told them I thought the job was worth $275 tops, door-to-door).  I finally contacted rodeway/yellow and got it settled for $260, with the cost not changing when I added a crate of windjammer/top box/misc.  I did have to compromise and do the pickup in Bellingham, 80 miles north.

I actually bought my R1100RT locally off of Craigslist last summer.  When I emailed the guy, I let him know that I had a thing for European bikes and already had a Guzzi and another BMW.  After a phone call or two, we went to his house after work.  Upon seeing his nice house, detached wood working shop with a vintage Porsche covered up in the corner along with an early GSX-R Suzuki on the floor, I knew that the bike had been in good hands.  He also produced a folder with all maintenance records and receipts.  I think I may have paid a couple hundred too much, but that was off set by the TLC lavished on it.

So a test ride, check the fluids and take her home to see if the family likes her.  I may have been a good deal.

On the plus side for me, a couple weeks ago I found a rowing shell on CL that looked good.  A few emails back and forth, and I drove down to New London, NC, found it to be in good condition at a good price, and brought it home.

I sold a V11 Scura on CL. Yea, I had to weed through a few nutballs. But not giving you the courtesy of a phone conversation thins 'em down pretty fast.

All I ever got from posting here and on the MGNOC was "experts" telling me I'm asking too much. I'll take a "non expert" with a check any day.

I actually asked a guy if he was just calling for a appraisal or if he's looking to buy. some people
