I heard tell of some people that had a dog that took on a porcupine - they paid a vet big dollars to do the cut-and-pull the quills routine. Then the dog took on another porcupine - this time they did the work themselves. Then the dog took on another porcupine and they shot the dog.
According to my vet Dean has the prescription. It is also important to watch for poisoning from the spray getting in the dog's mouth and being swallowed, extremely dark urine is the first recognizable symptom, liver and kidney failure follow.Brian
This works best for my dogs. Mix 1 quart hydrogen peroxide, cup baking soda, and 1 teaspoon Dawn, dish-washing liquid. If the hydrogen peroxide isn't in the home, use white vinegar as a substitute
Dunno 'bout dat......baking soda and vinegar reacts to produce a lot of CO2 gas, and nothing I can think of that would be useful.
not if you mix it first, then apply. hydrogen peroxide will react to baking soda as well. that's why you mix, then use it
My Chemistry Major and Google disagree, but it's not important enough to debate. It's just Science
A few years ago my terrier mix took a shot directly in the mouth . I never knew how hot/caustic skunk spray was until experienced up close. It burnt my eyes as I treated her. She was very pitiful, foaming from mouth and noise, eyes flooded, vomiting and scared. There wasn't much I could do, comfort her try to get her to drink some milk or something. I didn't know it could be life threatening. After I did everything reasonable, she stayed out. In the morning, the scent was barely detectable. I don't remember bathing her. In a few days the scent was gone. I can only guess that 99% of it hit her in the mouth and that it wasn't swallowed. Never had her to vet for it, and she's a happy camper to this day. I guess we were lucky. I hope she learned...
Did they adopt a pet porcupine?
We tried the tomato juice thing and it didn't help. I think the hydrogen peroxide is probably the most important ingredient to a de-stink wash.
