‘73 Eldorado, fitting new throttle cable.
« on: August 02, 2018, 11:18:01 PM »
My throttle cable broke at the handgrip. I’m trying to fit my new cable to the two-way gizmo in the splitter.

How do I get at the slide piece? Do the carb cables have to come off, and the double cable end removed?  I’m glad I’m not doing this on the side of the road in the rain!

The cable looks so simple, I thought the fitting would be easy.

If I'm reading this right. You have one cable at the throttle and then it goes into the splitter to get to the carbs.

Depending on the throttle you have. Pull the throttle grip apart or just the cover off. Pull the tank (at least on my loops). Pull the carb tops off and remove the slides to let the two cables be loose. Unscrew the front of the splitter and slide the slider out with the 2 carb cables still attached. Change out the throttle to slide cable and use a light lube on the slide. Pull the 2 carb cables to pull the slide back in. Reassemble all the bits and adjust the new cable.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Tom, sounds like you have done this before, maybe many times.

I’ll use that method first thing in the morning.

Many thanks.

Just a note. The front of the splitter can be a bit tough to unscrew. A medium sized Channel lock or Vice grip pliers with the jaws wrapped with tape to prevent scratches would be a good start. If with the tape the pliers just slide, try wd40, liquid wrench or the like and let it soak, and try again. If that fails, remove the tape and don't worry about the scratches.

If you ever thought the throttle was a bit sticky, slow to slow down like the cable was hanging, now would be the time to fully pull the splitter slide out and clean the slider and the housing.

Again, hope this helps,

With your instructions, the job went smoothly. I replaced all three cables, and there was lots of grease in the splitter, but I cleaned it out, and re-greased it.

Went for a ride and she runs like a top, just like before.

This bike sure puts a grin on my face!

Thanks for your help.
