Title: Dialect Map-Update: British & Irish Version
Post by: Guzzi Gal on April 30, 2021, 11:02:19 AM
I spent my first 35 years in northern California, with a couple of summers in Ohio. I didn't notice any appreciable dialect differences between Nor-Cal and AZ when we moved to Phoenix 19 years ago. My husband showed an affinity for the great lakes region of the U.S. in areas neither he nor his family have spent any time.

Update: There is a British & Irish version of the same dialect quiz, also at nytimes:

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/02/15/upshot/british-irish-dialect-quiz.html

A few of the quiz questions will change if you choose to take it more than once.

I've added green stars to the three areas I've spent the most time. Less than a year total for Ohio.

Interesting, I sound mostly like my area.

Fun! Put me spot on in Ohio/Michigan. Grew up in Ohio. Lived in Michigan for 7 years as an adult. I resisted Wisconsinese the five adult years I lived there. And I resisted like all get out talking Southern the two thirds of my adult life living in the South.

It put me with a West Coast accent, where I have never been.  It also says I am most different from my home area, which has a distinctive dialect, the Pittsburgh "Yinzer" area. My PA homies say I sound like a Southerner, but the Okies say I sound like a Yankee. 45 years in Oklahoma,  Tennessee, Florida and Texas will do that.

I love this stuff. Accents where I grew up in central IL were and are all over the place. My grandmother said the word "door" with 2 syllables - "dower"

People there seem to speak with more of a drawl as they get older. I went to school with a lot of the Chicago boys and absorbed some of the expressions, if not the accent - "or no" instead of "or not" and the dangling preposition "come with"

Of course SW Ohio is much the same, but you can always spot the Cincinnati native by their use of "please?" instead of "what?" if they need you to repeat something.

My personal favorite is the Pittsburgh "yinzer". Look up "Pittsburgh Dad" or "Greg and Donny" on YouTube - they're great!

I'm the type of person who unconsciously adjusts my speech to match those around me - sometimes for the worse!

I've never lived in any English-speaking country -

The quiz put me in New York City, Jersey City or Yonkers - - -
Least similar to Little Rock, Glendale and Phoenix.

Are you Norwegian or otherwise Scandinavian?

If so, that's funny because we keep all those in Wisconsin and Minnesota, and those folks sound nothing like the NY/NJ area!

I also love this. I'm originally from NH and most people can't guess where I'm from.
Living for the last 40 years in Mass where there are at least 3 different dialects.
Typical metro Boston, western Mass where they sound more like NYers and southern
where they sound more like RI. You'd never know they were from the same state!

GG thank you for posting.
Spot on for me and where I'm from. It identified 3 cities where they sound like me: Minneapolis/St. Paul, Madison (best 5 years of my life) and Milwaukee - pronounced M'waukee by those, like me, who are from here.  :thumb:

Pretty much nailed me in western and central New York. That said, I know of at least 5 different dialects in New York State alone. Dialect referring to pronunciation vs a specific word for something. Buffalo and Rochester are different despite being only about 60 miles apart. Then there is the North Country, Capitol Region, an of course New York City.
Those from the City would likely divide it up to 2-3 more dialects.

It shows my dialect is from Salt Lake City Utah, Omaha and Lincoln Nebraska  which is kind of odd because I grew up Southern California and Taiwan then spent my adult years in Seattle, Boise and Tucson with 3 years in Army  and 20+ years at Sea. I also spent a couple of years in Lake Charles LA.

I "mirror" speech patterns and mannerisms, too. It's said that most people mirror subconsciously.

Well that's interesting. Thanks for posting this GG

The three most similar cities are Detroit, Toledo (ok they're similar) and Columbus, Georgia. Wait, Columbus Georgia is similar to Detroit and Toledo?

Still makes some sense. I was born and raised in the metro Detroit area. Moved to the Upper Peninsula for college and lived there for 5 years, then moved to Missouri in 1984 where I've lived ever since. I thought I might have some Tennessee, which I guess is where the Georgia came from. My Dad was from Tennessee and I've spent time there every year for my entire life. Last month a guy in Tennessee made the comment, "You're from up north aren't you?" yet one of my life long friends from Detroit insists I now have a "southern accent".

That was fun

YOU nailed it, OldMojo!
I'm Norwegian.

Have more relatives in North Dakota than here, though.
There have been several visits both ways, but I guess the dialect hasn't rubbed off.

When we moved from Portsmouth, NH back to Michigan my daughters teacher wanted to put her in speech therapy because of her New England pronunciation.  We fought it and let her keep the accent until it gradually went away without any special instruction.  Prejudice in our school systems.

The words and phrases we use are revealing. When I was a lad in the early sixties living in central Texas young kids referred to coke, pepsi, 7-up etc as pop, while the over 50 folks called it soda water.
I lived on three air bases in Japan over a six or seven year period of time growing up and we heard and amalgamated all kinds of accents, dialect and slang. When I served in the Navy it was the same thing. These new guys would show up from Turkey Goble Holler and couldn't speak any understandable  english and within six months we all would change and a new form of speech was born. Interesting.

Most of the terms were pretty neutral but 'mischief night' and 'sneakers' put me in Northeast NJ / Essex County which IS where I grew up. The funny thing is when I'm in my hometown area the locals ask me where I'm from since I don't sound like someone from the Soprano's (even though there were two, uh, "families" on the street where I lived).

Both of my parents were from Mississippi and they kept soft southern accents until they passed. My sister and I were born in West Virginia and the family moved a lot over the years. Residences include Upstate NY, NYC, OH, PA, DE, VA, NC, NJ, & TN. All places east of the Mississippi River. The map has me pegged! At least I can order a grinder, hoagie, sub or poor boy depending on where I might be. My sister moved a lot with her Air Force husband and tended to pick up local dialects. Whenever we spoke on the 'phone I could usually tell where she was by her then current accent. Back in my birth state of WV for the past 17 years and still no twang.

Put me in Al and I’m in center NC, however the deep south was all about the same color, red zone. I wonder if that indicates RED NECK? If so I’m sorely offended 🤔🤣🤣😂🤣😂

When I’m in Europe, I use the most basic language of the people around me, but do not attempt to converse because I cannot.
However I will use abbreviations of English sentences constructed around the language that is prevalent.
For instance in France...
“Can you provide me with a tent site for one night, I am on a motorbike..”
Would become...
“Bonjour Misseier”, is possible for pitch 1 night with Moto...?”  (With physical accentuation of the “one”, “pitch” and “Moto”.
It does not seem to be the word difference that makes you unintelligible, as much as the order of the nouns, verbs and adjectives. Stealing shamelessly from the local vernacular can save a lot of angst.
In Italy if you are asked how enjoyable touring on a bike is...
A simple..”for sure is big fun..no ?”
Will gain an immediate and heartfelt nod of agreement and acceptance.
But I CANNOT stand to hear Jack Miller when he is imitating VR... :embarrassed:

He pronounced “road” as “rowed”. Plus he was so damn gracious and happy all the time...

Worked really hard as a kid to use the English language in proper fashion , studied the speech patterns of famous writers , hell , I can't bare to read any book written in local vernacular . Listened to the best orators , sought out those who sounded intelligent , and mostly speak sans terms like Youse guys , ya'll , bitchin' , groovy , gnarly , etc . My speech patterns represent all of that hard work .

The problem is , after living in deep east Texas for several years , followed by NW Arkansas , then Muskogee for 30 years , I still manage to sound like an Okie , an educated hopefully well spoken one , but still an Okie  At times like now when the allergens are peaking , my normally baritone voice comes out more like a 100 year old man who has imbibed too much whiskey for 80 years , Smithswede does almost all of my public communication in Cedar Vale for the simple reason that even amplified I am still barely audible by Friday

You seem to get your point across when you need to....

Here is the reality of that Peter , even when at times when dealing with an issue and possibly being blunt , try to imagine a soft spoken white haired old guy simply attempting to cut off a problem before it escalates .

Now back to the topic at hand .

One of the best parts of rallies is hearing the different speech patterns and accents . Our friend from Louisiana David W has this beautiful North Louisiana accent , round and full , like listening to an old style Southern gentleman , maybe sped up slightly from working as an RN for years .

It picked me as being from New York, where I visited just once a couple of years ago.

But I've lived in Marina Del Rey, Los Angeles multiple times for periods of six months or longer working on projects.  At one time I enjoyed ten summers in a row.

Unfortunately, I don't do this any more, and now have to face winters here in Auckland New Zealand.  Still milder than a lot of California.  - kept me at home for the last year.

Update:

There is a British & Irish version of the same dialect quiz, also at the NY Times!

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/02/15/upshot/british-irish-dialect-quiz.html

Your map

Definitely not from around here are you? Your answers were closer to the average person outside of Ireland and Britain than anywhere inside it.

The map shows places where answers most closely match your own, based on more than 1,000,000 respondents who said they were from Ireland or Britain.

Spot on, not surprisingly.
