Im not talking about "best" or Grammy winning- even if it is- but what's your favorite cover version of a song? There's a lot of music-oriented folks here and it's great to know what different people like and why.
Stevie Ray Vaughn's cover of Voodo Chile on Austin City Limits is awesome and has been my favorite for a long time, but I think my favorite one is this cover of Tom Petty's "Southern Accent" by The Steel Woods- ]https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7TNZyBPai5Q/] (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7TNZyBPai5Q/)It's such a great and honest personal interpretation of a good song.

I almost always prefer an original to a cover but there are exceptions.
Ray Wylie Hubbard is a stellar songwriter, absolutely fantastic BUT he does a terrific cover of James McMurtry's Choctaw Bingo.

I prefer Johnny Cash' version, but then I'm partial to Johnny Cash.
-
That's easy..Pretty Boy Floyd by Bob Dylan, (1980) best vocal performance I've heard Bob do.
From "Folkways a vision shared a tribute to a woods Guthrie and Ledbelly" the whole album is great.
You can find it on Spotify but there's no YouTube of this version, there's a lousy live version when BD was in Norway.
And second , Johnny Winter doing Highway 61 Revisited, i favor his version over the Hendrix cut.
-
I thought Commander Cody wrote the song, but I just looked it up and it is quite a bit older. I like (especially on road trips) Bill Kirchen's (live) version of 'Hot Rod Lincoln'. It is a lot of fun.
But- "favorite" is going to depend on the day and the hour. I have a lot of favorite everything.

Jolene by the White Stripes
Bang A Gong by Power Station.

:pink Floyd time cover by Godsmack
Or sound of silence by disturbed.
I know...I'm THAT guy .
-
Favorite??? But right now this one comes to mind. Bonnie Raitt's cover cover of Angel from Montgomery, by John Prine. Susan Tedeschi also does a fine rendition.
-
There have been many great covers over the journey including Blue Suede shoes by Elvis, Sorrow by Bowie, One by Cash, Nothing Compares to You by Sinead O'Connor. I love a good cover. Doesn't mean I don't like the original. In Oz we have a radio station called JJJ and for the last 35 years, every Friday, they invite the latest young cool bands to come in and do a cover version. There have been some absolute spankers done and they release an album of the songs each year. For example a young band called DMA's did Cher's 'I believe" and it blew everyone away. Recently someone did a version of a Taylor Swift song (whom I would never listen to) and it was a cracker.
-
I like Keith Urban’s re hash of the old Slim Dusty’s “Lights on the Hill”.
Kenny and Dolly’s old Bee Gee’s “Islands in the Stream”
-
In general, covers of older blues ,rock and country by the Stones, Clapton and other Brits of that era. Or the great bluesmen like Muddy Waters...One of many favorites is I'm a King Bee
-
Sound of silence by Disturbed.
-
In no specific order:
The Circle Jerks, Golden Shower of Hits
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, Goodbye Earl
Devo, Satisfaction
Actually Me First and the Gimme Gimmes have lots of great covers. It what they do.
-
A few.. Chris Whitley does a amazing cover of the Doors "Christel Ship" Also Him, and Jeff Lang do a cover of Dylans "Changing of the guards" That is amazing!! Also I cought a YouTube vid of Brandi Carlile doing a KILLER cover of Elton Johns "Madmad across the water"
-
That’s an easy one “Lonesome Fugitives “ by the late great, one of a kind, man of the century, one snd only.....Merle Haggard👍👍👍
-
Jimi's cover of All Along the Watchtower.
But then, Manfred Mann's cover of Blinded by the Light.
How do I decide. So many good ones. Yes's cover of America.
I give up.
-
Get Down Make Love - Nine Inch Nails
One of the best covers of all covers of all time.
-AJ
-
A cover that should be considered is CCRs version of Heard It Through The Grapevine. Taking a classic smooth soul song and turning it into their own guitar driven rock classic was pure genius.
-
This version of Cheap Trick's hit: https://youtu.be/0hi1jVceof8
I like this version of E.L.O's hit as well: https://youtu.be/NTbNCezCJNM

On that note, just about any Bob Dylan song, when performed by someone else...

Jeff Healy - Yer Blues and his version of While my Guitar Gently Weeps
Alvin Lee - Live - Blue Suede Shoes Medely
Way too many to pick just one.

My favorite cover varies week to week, right now its Heather Hardy covering "Amazing Grace"

He also does a fair job with Hey Joe.
There's a YouTube group called Foxes and Fossils and they do some outstanding covers of various artists
.

That is indeed tough as there are many great covers of songs that were already barnburners in their original versions .
Two come to mind:
1) Statesboro Blues by Willie McTell . Great covers by both the Allman Bros Band and John Hammond on his first album.
2) instrumental version of Sweet dreams by Roy Buchanan.
-
She came in thru the bathroom window Joe Cocker by the Beatles
-
I think SRV could cover just about anything as well, if not better than original. I really like his take on "Little Wing" & "Chitlins Con Carne".
Other favs are: Nirvana's cover of Bowies "The Man who sold the World"
Cake's cover of "Never Gonna Give You Up"
-
Jolene by the White Stripes
-AJ
This reminds me- another really good cover (if you like soul) is Ben L'Oncle Soul's cover of 'Seven Nation Army'. I don't think Ben is very well known in the US.
-
The Twangbangers' version of "Hot Rod Lincoln". When they are passing cars going up Grapevine hill, they reference a different music icon pulling over to let them by. From Pee Wee King, to Elvis, to Johnny Cash, and on and on. Every band the singer mentions, his band tries to play a few bars that are representative of the music the bands made famous. Its a fun tribute to the past.

My personal fave JJ Cale made a living by "underplaying " his own tunes. The "fast gun" players who heard them felt compelled to "improve" them . Ole JJ just sat home, loved on his lady, wrote more tunes, and cashed checks. I.E.
After Midnight and Cocaine by Clapton
Call me the Breeze and Same Old Story By Skynyrd
Magnolia Poco
Here are some of the people who covered just his first album: https://www.jjcale.com/covers-naturally-1972

I got the chance to see JJ Cale three times in concert. He was no slouch in the performance department. He was an amazing guitarist, much admired for the lyricality of his playing.

A trick question to some extent as there have been many great covers of well known songs. Somewhere I have, or had, an album of a studio band doing Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds that was pretty darn good.
Anyway, on another note, get it? When the group that made it famous compliments the artist(s), well...
I stumbled onto this recently and thought WOW. Enjoy.

John Henry
Well, not so much a trick question as a great way to expand a play list or two... Hopefully it's doing exactly that.

Spiderbait does a pretty cool cover of Ram Jam's "Black Betty". Lots of cool covers out there!

This is one of my all-time favorites, Molly Hatchet covering Allman Brothers and I think even surpassing the original.

This is a Stevie Ray Vaughn song from a cover band that does a very creditable job with a lot of different artists. Not the musical choices you'd really expect from three 20-something Irish gals. I found them from another post elsewhere on WG.

I'm "different" But I like this version of a Etta James tune "I'd rather go blind" by Davina and the Vagabonds. She Really sings her heart out on this episode of The Bluegrass Underground TV show. If you've never seen the show, It's worth watching for someone that's more acoustically oriented like myself. It's filmed near Nashville in a cave. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2o2_3XHIUJg

Nice mix, one could actually hear the (marvelous!) bass guitar.
Thanks for sharing!

Wow! I've gotta say Dea Matrona is my new favorite cover band. I searched online and couldn't find them covering Rory Gallagher, which seems like a glaring omission, I'm sure they could pull it off.

Lots of good ones mentioned. The first three that came to mind are Hendrix's version of Watchtower, Skynyrd's cover of Call Me the Breeze (huge JJ Cale fan here. Envious of those of you that got to see him in concert) and Cache Valley Drifter's bluegrass cover of Cream's White Room. Its not new and I doubt many (any) of you have heard it, but its a peach

That SRV cover is so great. In terms of all time greats, "All Along the Watchtower" by Hendrix is obviously up there.
Lesser known would be everything Michael Hedges applied his extreme talent to.
I'd love to see someone make a CD of nothing but covers of Gimme Shelter.

My favorite live cover band(along with their own songs) is Los Lobos. I think we have seen them a dozen plus times and they will always sneak in a cover. We saw them at The Republic in New Orleans and they did a cover of 20,000 Headmen that was just great.
Their version of Shoot Out the Lights by Richard Thompson:

fantastic band. Seen them with TTB. They just rocked and both bands played together on both sets. They also have two styles of shows, one with more roots and Spanish songs, the other more Anglo. They are touring with TTB again next year, delayed a year.
I won't miss Los Lobos if they're within driving distance.

Here's the road Hot Rod Lincoln was written about, still popular with local riders. The lyrics were changed to sell more records in California.
