Johnny Cash's version of Personal Jesus was pretty damn good.

My personal fave JJ Cale made a living by "underplaying " his own tunes. The "fast gun" players who heard them felt compelled to "improve" them . Ole JJ just sat home, loved on his lady, wrote more tunes, and cashed checks.   I.E.

I got the chance to see JJ Cale three times in concert.  He was no slouch in the performance department.  He was an amazing guitarist, much admired for the lyricality of his playing.

A trick question to some extent as there have been many great covers of well known songs. Somewhere I have, or had, an album of a studio band doing Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds that was pretty darn good.

Anyway, on another note, get it?  When the group that made it famous compliments the artist(s), well...

I stumbled onto this recently and thought WOW. Enjoy.

John Henry

Well, not so much a trick question as a great way to expand a play list or two...    Hopefully it's doing exactly that.

This is one of my all-time favorites, Molly Hatchet covering Allman Brothers and I think even surpassing the original.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrtRucPEbsI

This is a Stevie Ray Vaughn song from a cover band that does a very creditable job with a lot of different artists.  Not the musical choices you'd really expect from three 20-something Irish gals.  I found them from another post elsewhere on WG.

I'm "different"   But I like this version of a Etta James tune "I'd rather go blind" by Davina and the Vagabonds. She Really sings her heart out on this episode of The Bluegrass Underground TV show. If you've never seen the show, It's worth watching for someone that's more acoustically oriented like myself. It's filmed near Nashville in a cave.         https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2o2_3XHIUJg

Hell, yeah - that was awesome!
Nice mix, one could actually hear the (marvelous!) bass guitar.
Thanks for sharing!

Wow! I've gotta say Dea Matrona is my new favorite cover band. I searched online and couldn't find them covering Rory Gallagher, which seems like a glaring omission, I'm sure they could pull it off.

I thought Commander Cody wrote the song, but I just looked it up and it is quite a bit older.  I like (especially on road trips) Bill Kirchen's (live) version of 'Hot Rod Lincoln'.  It is a lot of fun.

But- "favorite" is going to depend on the day and the hour.  I have a lot of favorite everything.

I saw Bill Kirchen do that a couple times in the 90's.  Lotta fun.

Lots of good ones mentioned. The first three that came to mind are Hendrix's version of Watchtower, Skynyrd's cover of Call Me the Breeze (huge JJ Cale fan here. Envious of those of you that got to see him in concert) and Cache Valley Drifter's bluegrass cover of Cream's White Room. Its not new and I doubt many (any) of you have heard it, but its a peach

Im not talking about "best" or Grammy winning- even if it is- but what's your favorite cover version of a song?  There's a lot of music-oriented folks here and it's great to know what different people like and why.

Stevie Ray Vaughn's cover of Voodo Chile on Austin City Limits is awesome and has been my favorite for a long time, but I think my favorite one is this cover of Tom Petty's "Southern Accent" by The Steel Woods- ]https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7TNZyBPai5Q/]It's such a great and honest personal interpretation of a good song.

Next...

That SRV cover is so great.  In terms of all time greats, "All Along the Watchtower" by Hendrix is obviously up there.

Lesser known would be everything Michael Hedges applied his extreme talent to.

I'd love to see someone make a CD of nothing but covers of Gimme Shelter.

My favorite live cover band(along with their own songs) is Los Lobos. I think we have seen them a dozen plus times and they will always sneak in a cover.  We saw them at The Republic in New Orleans and they did a cover of 20,000 Headmen that was just great.

Their version of Shoot Out the Lights by Richard Thompson:

They also have an album coming out on covers and a list of their tour:

fantastic band.   Seen them with TTB.  They just rocked and both bands played together on both sets.  They also have two styles of shows, one with more roots and Spanish songs, the other more Anglo.  They are touring with TTB again next year, delayed a year.

I won't miss Los Lobos if they're within driving distance.

Just read that Chrissie Hynde is releasing an album of Dylan covers on May 20 something. This has the potential of being really good. I'm a huge fan of Chrissie and the Pretenders.
