V Sumps and Cooler Running
« on: January 04, 2019, 05:30:16 PM »
Lads,

Has anyone seen lower temps from using a V-sump on a big twin that already had a factory sump extension?

I have not used it w/spacer, I have put it on EV's. Not on my bike so I have no idea about running cooler.

Kristian, assuming you are referring to your Sport 1100. I'm just thinking aloud here, but at that cost wouldn't it make sense instead to fit an external oil cooler?

Pauls bike is pushing a few more hp than an 1100 sport. I haven't had significant problems with over heating on my 1100 sport unless sitting in traffic for an extended period of time in summer (Australian Summer BTW) if the idle picks up 100rpm over normal its the motor starting to lean out due to heat. A gentle run with airflow gets it back to normal pretty rapidly never had issues at the track or when "riding in a sportsman like manner".

I agree with you. Not a city bike for many reasons.

Kristian, you might find this post helpful on adding a deep sump on a V11. I don't know if your side stand is the same as a V11 but if it is look at post #5.

More not a toy run bike but I'll emphasis in 170 000kms I might count the times when its got a bit warm on one hand, it is unusual circumstances.

My RACECO Daytona had one, don’t know if it helps in traffic as I didn’t commute, does the same as the spacer on the older ones.

My V11 has a cooler without deep sump - was always fine in traffic?

I gotta say it LOOKS good..    I read the description 4 times and still not getting this though...  "The Pantschverluste the crankshaft are minimized with this oil pan. "....  What ever it means it shows I clearly need one . :)

Pantschverluste: windage losses, I guess. "verluste" = losses. Probably has nothing to do with losing pants.

I should probablly point out that my 1100 sport is the carbed version so no cooler and a fuel system that doesn't adjust to running conditions.

Thanks, but, too much fiddling about; and also requires use of the shallow V11 sump of which I'm not a fan.

I'm only curious about whether anyone has seen decreased temps from situations like summer city running, which gets things hot. I suspect a V sump wouldn't make a big difference. They still see 240-250F on hot summer days during highway running according to my dip stick thermometer, a bit warm.

Dynotec is a V sump fan, and HMB advocates cooling also.

I've been riding Guzzi's in traffic since 1991 here in Phoenix, Arizona and have never had an over heating issue. Just saying.
