FortNine - counter lean steering
« on: September 22, 2021, 03:46:55 PM »
Another interesting FortNine video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1mSavQ_DXs

Growing up on dirt bikes, using counter lean to steer a bike at slower speeds is natural. Took me a while to learn to lean in when road riding at higher speeds.

Both Motojutsu and McRider have posted response videos. Neither were disparaging but seemed to feel clarification was needed.

I lean in whenever a tight turn might grind my Vespa's crash bars. I don't have to be Speed Racer either. The rest of the time, I counterbalance at low speeds or ride neutral at higher ones.

I really liked that.
Well put and with a garnish of humour.
The only bit I’d like clarified was at around 3:50 when he said “ leaning your body inwards”, when you do that you will have stood the bike upright a certain amount and the C of M will still be in the same position spatially. He was correct earlier when he said the “forces act around the Centre of Mass”.
But I loved the rest of it.
Certainly one of the better ones.

It's a method of riding that I have endorsed over the years.

Sure, if you climb off your seat and hang on the inside of the corner you will get around it quicker, but for me that's just too much hard work.  I just lean the bike, while I stay relatively upright.
