850 T3 transmission, hypoid gear oil?
« on: March 23, 2019, 01:36:33 PM »
Getting conflicting info on the interwebs.  Ok to use API Gl 5 80/90 "Hypoid" gear oil in transmission?  Manual calls for API Gl-5... Hypoid is supposedly for bevel gears like the rear drive.

I have a quart of this oil and want to use it so not looking for suggestions of other oil as I can get non Hypoid at the store.

Thanks!

No bronzy type metals in the transmissions of a T3, GL5 of your preferred brand will be fine. GL-5 is hypoid oil as far as I know.

It calls for GL5. You have GL5. Don't over think it.

Thank you!  I just spent a lot of time replacing the clutch and didn't want to cause any other problems!

I think the only reason that they say to use EP oil in my smallblock gearbox is that the transfer gears are helical cut, the box itself are all straight cut and don't actually need an EP oil.

I just went through this with my '77. On a tip from a pro transmission builder the nearest to original spec I found is Castrol 80/90 Limited Slip.
Only been ridden 2 miles but seems smoother on the synchros to me. My 2cents.

Never thought of that one.  It gets used in the rear diff of my Nissan Mistral.  Lacks the super slippery stuff so that it doesn't wreck the plates in the diff.  I wouldn't have thought it would apply in a dog type gearbox.

Well. I'm happy with it. Could be this old box is worn out but now, for the first time in 5 years, it's fun to ride.

That's a sneaky way to start an oil thread.
