Title: Layshaft end float

Just in the process of checking over my 5 speed box, replacing the return spring and shimming the selector drum and like some thoughts on layshaft float.
Book says to shim shaft from 167.1 to 0.2 but once fitted I still think the end float is excessive.
Watched a couple of German guys assembling a box and he trail fitted the layshaft saying he likes float to be 0.1 but no more than 0.20mm.

     Pictured is the mainshaft, I think that is what you are looking to set the end float on. When setting my last box I searched high and low and asked the "experts" and all I got was crickets for several days except for one german fellow who thought as close to zero as you can get, but not zero because you need some clearance for oil and expansion contraction etc. In all practicality, with the available factory shims try for 5 to 7 thousandths of an inch.  A custom thickness shim is about the only way to get that. I settled for just using a stock shim and ended up with about .010 to .012 inch end float and the box works just fine.

I have had the first/second gear segment actually slip on the shaft and start to separate. It does not harm other than making it impossible to press the release button to get fifth gear off.
So now I try to get all of the free play that I can out. But of course making sure it still spins easily. That and I loctite the first/second segment in place.

Luckily my release pin and bush came off with no trouble but I still checked that the gear set was pressed fully home and then poured as much loctite as I could down the spline.
The case gasket is 0.20mm thick or 0.008 thou so if I set it up with no float without gasket fitted then it should be fine.

I do the same. About the right amount of play.
