BREVA 750 CHARGING SYSTEM
« on: September 23, 2017, 12:03:37 PM »
I have a 2008 Breva that I haven' t ridden in a while.  Had an issue when it was in storage that the battery went dead  (Breva parasitic draw)and would not take a charge.   When boosted with another battery the bike would start and run fine until I unhooked the battery booster then it would sputter,   all kinds of idiot lights would flash and the bike would die.   Figuring battery was totally pooched ordered a new battery and installed it.  Bike started immediately and ran flawlessly  for 100km then started to hesitate and the fuel light came on despite having just filled it, then all the lights started flashing, then the EFI light came on and the bike died, so i figure it is not charging.  Turns over slowly if at all.  Is there a fuse or diode or relay that I could have damaged while boosting it.  Bike was good before I stored it so thinking something has happened to the charging system while dicking around with the batteries.  Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

Cheers, Tim

Since it ran OK for a while, I would look at two things. Check all your connections first. As the old battery went dead and then all the charging and stuff, corrosion and poor fitting connections could have worked and/or lost good contact. Second, it is not unheard of to get a bad new battery.  Easy to pull, full charge and then get it professionally load tested.

Good luck.
The best part of riding a motorcycle is to tilt the horizon and to lift the front coming out of a corner and to drift the back end powering thru loose dirt and to catch a little air topping a hill and... yeah it's all good!

Had it on the  2 amp smart charger for about 45 minutes and  it started right away and idles fine,  Checked the voltage at the battery when running was only 11.5.   Went up to 11.8 when the ignition was turned off so don't think it is the battery.

That voltage is too low.  It is NOT charging.  Should be 12.6 at rest and rise to 13.5 or more when high idled.  You may have damaged to alternator.  When you added a booster battery, you had a big buffer to smooth out spikes or overloads.  The minute you disconnected the booster, your dead battery was no longer able to provide that buffer service.  Likely then that the alternator spiked badly and hurt itself or the regulator or?????  Time to get some serious testing on the charge components.

I agree the voltage is low to non existent from the charging system.  What I need is a little direction as to where to start looking.

It could be just as simple as the 30 Amp fuse blown at (22)

That would be a great relief if that were the case.  I have checked on the bike for a 30 amp fuse but have been unable to locate one.  Any idea as to where one might find the 30 amp charging fuse if so equipped?
Thanks, Tim

And the Cigar goes to Kiwi Roy.  You truly are  a Guzzi Hero.  Found the fuse and sure enough it was blown.  I'm willing to bet I accidentally grounded out on the frame while trying to boost it.   Changed it out and now charging around 13.5 volts which I believe to be about right.  Kiwi Roy, if you are ever in the Niagara Falls, Canada area I owe  you a beer  or two or three, heck I might even spring for a case of our finest suds.  Of course I'd have to help you drink it.  You have made my day sir.

Cheers,  Tim

The parasitic draw on the Breva 750 is well known. I don't use a trickle charger but instead top up about every three weeks with a 3.5 amp smart charger. I get 7-8 years out of a wet cell battery.

Don't think the 30 mp is the standard size. It is the size of the spare that I carry. Pretty sure the standard is 20 amp, however, they are pretty much at their max due to the way it is wired and old age can get them to blow. I know quite a few owners have beefed that one up to 30amps for that very reason.

Good to see that Kiwi-Roy got the diagnosis first time up. :thumb:

On the Breva's I know, the main fuse block (with 2 30A fuses) is on the LHS under the side cover & the auxiliary fuses on the RHS - pages 70-71 on the owner's manual that I have.

It may be wise to check the connector box from the reg/rec. 2 wires come up from the reg/rec & lead to a box, probably under the tank. This junction box on the V7C has the reputation of occasionally burning out, apparently due to high resistance. If it is on the way out, it may interfere with charging. Mine gave out suddenly while riding - the dash lights suddenly went crazy & the speedo needle bounced around all over the place. A few miles later, the battery was drained. That junction box had burnt out.

As an aside, the Breva 750 owners manual is a much more professionally produced sample of the literature than anything produced for the V7s. Well worth a read.

Edit: glad to see you found the problem.

Glad you found it, the schematic I linked to my post was the wrong one LOL
I replaced it with the Breva

I think i would be inclined to disconnect the battery negative when you park it for the winter.
Make sure you smear the battery terminals with some Vaseline every year or two.
