How do I get this off ?
« on: April 20, 2018, 09:46:21 AM »
It is the chromed plastic trim piece on the side of the rack / backrest on a '94 California 1100 . Have removed the screw toward the back but something is holding it behind the reflector . How do I get behind the reflector without breaking something ? Removing trailer hitch . Thank you , Peter .

Look on the underside of the chrome piece  I think there are a couple of  bolts hidden there.
Might be Allen heads

TOMB is right.  The reflector attaches to a shroud.  Behind the shroud there are two bolts going from down to up holding the rail in place.  6mm Allen wrench, iirc.  Be careful putting them back in.  I watched a guy in AZ get the rack misaligned a tiny bit and instead of figuring out why the bolts weren't threading up easily, he forced them all.  It was embarrassing to watch.

There could be a shroud bolt behind the reflector, too.  I don't remember that part.

I'll double check when I get home, but I think there is a screw behind the reflector.  I think I pried it off (carefully) and reattached it with Velcro so it's easy on and off after that.

I was right. There is a screw behind the reflector. I don't remember what held it on originally, but it can be pried off. Here's a pic, I held mine on with Velcro.

These must have changed a few times , but mine is like Dharma Bum's . Underneath , the racks that holds the side bags are bolted on , but do not interfere with the chromed plastic pieces . I was able to avoid prying the reflector to get to the screw by bending back the loose end of the plastic enough to slip the strut off the boss on each side . So the trailer hitch is off with the trim pieces intact  .
