Partly installed kit?? 2003 stone
« on: June 27, 2023, 08:53:00 PM »
Hi, just picked up a 2003 california stone at a good price for my son. The bike has 120k km on it and in very good condition. Engine is super quite and all seems good. while checking under the rocker covers i can see that the adjusters have been broken off as they should be on a kitted hydro engine however it looks like the bike does not have the later version alloy retainer on top of the valve springs. Is this a major drama? does it need to be "fixed"
Im guessing that perhaps the recall was released in stages and i may have only part of the recall completed? given the mileage on the bike i would have thought any failure would have occurred well before now?

Any and all info greatly appreciated

If it was going to crap out, I would think it would have dome it by now.

Ride it!!

The last fix with the aluminum valve spring retainers also had new valve springs in the kit. The part number of those springs was the same number as the non high performance round head bikes. That spring had significantly lower seat and open pressures. The numbers for the springs in the last kit may be available on line some where.

Thanks for the info, i am guessing it would not be normal to not have the springs changed but to have the other moded parts done...
Do i now change them or leave it and just ride? i will be changing a leaking seal in the clutch area soon (and replacing clutch and any other bits while im there) so will be elbow deep anyways

Each of the successive kits came with new lifters and different cams and adjusters, only the last kit came with the retainers and springs along with all the other stuff to set up and adjust the lifters etc. The latest kits are apparently still available in some places, maybe AF1 or some others. I have seen the old cams being sold on the bay of fleas, even some kits containing old used cams and lifters and followers etc. presented as replacement parts.

https://www.thisoldtractor.com/mg_manuals/instructions_hydraulic_tappet_refitting_camshaft_recall.pdf

Article has instructions, part numbers for final recall kit.

If I remember correctly, the final camshaft had oil passages in the lobes. You might be able to see them from below when oil pan is dropped for a filter change.

Since you’re not hearing any engine noises I’d be tempted to leave it alone. You’re going to have enough fun crabbing the frame to replace the clutch.
