GRIT rally - Sep 30- Oct 2, 2016
« on: July 28, 2016, 03:48:34 PM »
The Turnip called and gave a me a donkey BBQ for not posting info about the GRIT rally (Guzzi Riders in Texas) that the lovely Georgeanne puts on in Lindale. Rather than wrestling the big Texan , thought it might be easier to let everyone know it will be Sep 30- Oct 2 . Beaver will be along shortly to fill in some details .

Oh , and if those dates are wrong , take it up with the Turnip Farmer

The 33rd ANNUAL GUZZI RIDERS IN TEXAS (GRIT) RALLY will be held Friday, Sept 30 - Sun, Oct 2 at the American Legion Jordan-Duncan Post 15 which is located at 18251 CR 498 in Lindale, Texas.  Free camping is available onsite.  If you need W/E hookups for campers or tent A/C's or heaters, that will cost you $15/night.  (No sewer hookups or dump station).  Call, pm, or email me to reserve a hookup spot.  Bring your own favorite chair!  There are some picnic tables scattered around the grounds, but not at each campsite.  There is a big fire ring by the lake and plenty of firewood will be available!

All meals are provided except Saturday lunch.  Coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and water will be available all the time.

The main event is on Sunday, starting with Ken Hand's delicious homemade dessert breads and ending with a spaghetti lunch, awards, 50/50, and door prizes.  It's usually over by about 1:30, but you can hang around as late as you want.

There is plenty to do and see in the area and all the roads are great.  There will be a History/Mystery Run with a prize awarded.

Bring your friends and family and your fishing poles with you.  There is a lake (no swimming) and a pier and Tex has a paddle boat (also called pedal boat) that you can take out or bring your own non-motorized boat/raft. You can also enjoy a relaxing walk around part of the lake.

For those of you who don't like to camp, there are several motels in Lindale and surrounding areas. There is a huge Flea Market in the nearby town of Canton and area motels fill fast, so if you want a room in Lindale, it's best to make reservations.  All the motels are on Hwy 69 by I-20.  America's Best Value Inn is on the South side of I-20 on the service road.

America's Best Value Inn 903-882-6145
Hampton Inn 903-882-1002
Best Western Inn 903-882-8884
Comfort Suites 903-882-8613
Laquinta Inn & Suites 903-882-1600
Motel 6  903-882-7800

This is a free rally, so fill the donation bucket and buy lots of 50/50 tickets to help pay expenses!

The weatherman has called for clear skies all weekend, highs in the upper 70's and lows in the low 50's.  (will edit this as needed)

For more information, contact MGNOC Texas State Rep Georganne Foster, 903-316-7720 or georganne@suddenlink.net.  See ya there!

May I ask:

--suggested best route from Houston?
--friendly bunch?

Engineer's mind at work.  Could I pack everything into my Ortlieb?

Dusty,

I need to make a decision soon.  Date is prime Colorado aspen time before snow flies. Colorado trip involves air reservations.

 Giving Grit serious thought.
Don't want to get stuck in construction zone hell.  Route matters.

Never even pitched my tent, or used any of the camp gear.

Only gravel road is the 100 feet to get into the VFW, all the rest is paved up till the location!  You could walk the 100 feet if needed! Don't overplan it!

Friendly bunch...but of course!

1 tent, 1 sleeping bag, 1 change of clothes if needed...done!

Camping is more fun than a hotel in Lindale, there are plenty but you don't want to ride away from the campfire at night...so best to stay at the campsite and relax.

Please don't go to the VFW!  You won't have near as much fun there as you will with us at the American Legion!  :)  They may not take too kindly to someone setting up camp outside their facility.

Lucydad,  I like to go through Brookshire and head north and east, staying off the interstate.  Nicer roads and less traffic.  I can look at my map and post a few routes if you are interested.  Hang around for a week after the GRIT rally and head up to Talihina to the OK campout!

Of course it's a friendly bunch.  I've never been to an unfriendly Moto Guzzi Rally!  Even my grandkids are there for the Sunday festivities!

Pics from the past:
Tex, Randy Tefft (New Hampshire), and Timothy Barlow (Washington), don't they look like a friendly bunch?

Yes, nice pix and smiles on faces.  We all know TEXAS has the most friendly people with the possible exception of Kazakhstan.

A couple of "stupid" questions please.
-- is the power so I could recharge my iPhone for communication and navigation?
-- is there cell phone reception?
-- are there sanitary facilities, or is this dig a hole primitive camping? Porto-potties?  Any showers or bring towelettes?
--water available?
--ravenous bug city? mosquitoes, gnats, chiggers?

Sorry again, and apologies.  I have done a lot of camping in Wyoming and Alaska and way backcountry NM, MT and such.  But thats a long time ago.

Looking at my calendar and weather possibilities in San Juan County, Colorado at 9300 feet. I need a late winter to make GRIT work.

I've been to 44 of the 45 Nationals and average 4-5 other Guzzi rallies a year. Never ONCE have I asked a question about a rally. I go, I discover, I have a good time. Maybe it helps that I have an 8th grade education from a one room country school.

The American Legion is NOT a gun free zone as we have a gun range. No need to worry about the wild hogs, armadillos, possums, boa constrictors, cotton mouths, etc.

I need to ask Beaver if the mosquitos carry the zika virus.

FYI I'm Alfred Neumans cousin. What, me worry? You wont have to worry if Beaver posts a picture of my cousin, Slicer.
