Unmitigated risk aversion is the new Puritanism; complete with witch hunts funny outfits and humorless preachers thundering doom. The Deity is Safety; Satan is a Lawyer; but the object is the same: to suck the life out of life and tell you how to live it.

Hailwood on the 250/6. I saw and heard one of these at Daytona Vintage back in the '90s when they had the legends over. Knobby Clark started it and I think, not sure, Geoff Duke did a couple laps around the track. Never heard a bike as loud as that one.

Here is my favorite.

That picture bring to memory a monthly chapter in a motorcycle magazine I subscribed to in the sixties.
It was called the "Down hill  straight."

If it's "pictures" and not just "photos", it'd be W. Maud's "Ride of the Valkyrie" ...

Well, you know, it's a Boer War-era painting representing the Valkyrie carrying the bravest of the fallen warriors from the battlefield to Valhalla.  Once there, the Valkyrie serve them mead in luxury and good fellowship with their comrades and the gods, and prepare them for the events of Ragnarok an' all, but straight off the battlefield, yeah, don't look too close ... !

The first AMA national that I attended (Houston short track/tourist trophy) featured Dick Mann among a host of future stars including a junior by the name of Kenny Roberts Jr.  I was a big fan and attended many nationals that he competed in at the Astrodome and other venues. He made his name on road race tracks, but King Kenny was a dirt track guy at heart.

I DID take this one myself, that's whats so crazy...he's doing 110-120 and I'm standing 20 yards away...not much safety concerns back then, I had free reign over the whole track
