"If the pan is still on, how do you know what's in there?"

If you mean what debris are in there, I had the pan off about 2 weeks ago to check the rod bearings and see if my milk shake was ready  The only odd things that I have ever found in the pan was the milk shake and some very small bits that look like pepper that I think may be carbon. You can mash it between your fingers. I've found the same in my loops as well. No metal bits or sludge.

I have looked at the cam from below. The lobes that I could see looked fine. Even tried an inspection camera, it was not much help.

Thanks again,

Some of this is a judgment call to be made by the guy with eyes on it.  We can give general advice, but unless we're there with you, we can only opine so much.

Id sure be tempted to put a new pump on it and run it. probly only get 100k miles out of it that way but at this point the other choice would be to yard it out and do a major overhaul.

I did order the tensioner, forgot to mention that, as well as a clutch cable. I used a Loop cable to fix the Cali. Needed one slightly shorter than what I had on my shelf. My chain is fine from what I can tell. Just the pump crapped out.

Thanks for the reminder!

The pump went in just fine. Now the pump shaft turns like I think one should.

The tensioner did not fit. Here is how that went: http://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=88551.0

So a few more days waiting on a stock tensioner and I'll get to see if this and the new oil pump did any good at fixing the rattle. I think I was hearing the bad pump.

Once back together, I'll tell how it did.

Thanks again,

I received the replacement stock Guzzi tensioner and installed it. The stock one fit just like the original. For whatever reason, maybe the Hydro's had the raised are under the pivot pin for the tensioner.

Oil pump did not go as well as I had thought. The key way was too shallow to get the square key in with the gear on. Ordered another pump, checked the key way and all was fine. If I had a mill or the like I could have made the key way deeper and all would have been fine.

Installed the gears and chain. Way darn easier than I thought it was going to be. The timing cover went on pretty easy. I was told I may have to remove the coils to get the cover on and off, but there was just enough room to tilt it and slide it past the crank shaft.

After getting the rest of the parts put back on the bike, fired it up. Sounded great. No more rattle that I had been hearing since I've owned the bike. Two rides to work, no rattle!!!!

Thanks again to all that helped me with this and gave me the confidence to deal with the chain and gears!! Great tips as well for getting the cover off while the engine was still in the frame.

Late to the party but to hold the crank/flywheel you can drop the sump and use a block of wood between the crank counter weight and case.

I ended up using a large thick bladed screwdriver through the timing hole in the bell housing. Worked just fine. I was overly concerned that I might break the tip off of the screwdriver with the 105Ft # on the cam nut. No problem!

Thanks for the idea though!
