Title: What motorcycle accessory / product would you rate a “10”?
Post by: willowstreetguzziguy on January 20, 2023, 09:27:33 AM
What motorcycle accessory or product have you used over time that you are absolutely thrilled with and would buy it again, again, and again?

PRODUCT / HOW LONG YOU OWNED IT /  WHY?

My Nolan N100-5 Modular helmet

Bought it last year June 2022

Fits perfect (after getting thinner cheek pads), love the quick released chin strap, drop down sun shade (1st time for me), flip-up chin bar, quality, finish, and graphics are top rate AND it’s made in Italy! Love it every time I put it on.

FUEL Sergeant riding pants. Pretty spendy (now up to $400ish) but they are the most comfortable riding gear I have ever owned. I have the originals, and they look, feel, and fit like brand new after 6 years.  Only gripe was minor (kneepad flaps) and that has been remidied with the second generation. Go great with red suspenders (guzzi content).

I would love to upgrade to the waxed version, but I have a feeling I will never wear out the ones I have.

Set of three small leather(ish) bags that fit on the inside of the windshield of my Ambassador. Perfect for wallet, keys, GARAGE DOOR OPENER, etc. Used to be would by National for their windshields. I believe NLA but there are probably universal one available.

Unfortunately not a Guzzi compatible product, but I have a garage door opener that fits where the clutch collar is on my Road King. Looks factory. Freaking genius. Wish someone made something similar for my Cal Spec.

Also add, Bagster tank cover and tank bag system on my Cali. Not sure if they are still around. A Google search does show products from European companies. May not have stock though. I replaced my tank bag just last year with one I bought off of eBay from England so that's always an option.

In no specific order.

1. $30 chineasium phone mount w/ wireless charger - Owed 6 months, works great and didn't break the bank.

2. Hippo Hand, Alcans - 1+years Warm dry hands.

3. Grip puppies - 5 years. More comfortable, save the underlying grip from wear and work with heated grips.

4. Amazon LED light pods - 4+ years many versions. Work great proding extra light ast a very affordable price.

5. 1/4" Luan plywood for pannier false bottoms - 4+ year. Makes the pannier more versatile and cost almost nothing.

6. Titan E/H 1500lb motorcycle lift - 2 years. Makes working on bikes much less a chore and more a pleasure. Had a HF lift prior and while they are good the Titan is another level.

7. NoMar tire changer - 7+ years. Only tool that I own that makes beer. It has also save me a bundle of money changing my own tires.

Hi Willow,                                                                                 1-20-23

I have a RotoPax 1 gallon gas can in my pannier (Cali 1400 Tour).  I've used it twice...PHEEWWW!

Also...I double down on the Koso heated grips.  My bike did not come with heated grips.

Be well, stay well,

Crampbuster - makes long rides effortless...no wrist tension.
River boots - all day comfortable for riding, resoled them with Vibran soles after the first soles wore out.
Shoei Neotec -  all the same features listed above in the first post...top quality, after 10 years with a Neotec 1, I just upgraded to a Neotec 2
Darien/Cortech Jackets - perfect fits, lots of pockets, all day comfort.
Hydroflasks - not specifically moto related, but I keep 2 of them on long trips, one for coffee and one for ice cold water.  Maintains temps all day long.
Ram Mounts/Quad Locks - Great for several types of devices
TomTom Rider/550
TPMS Steelmate - after market tire pressure monitoring system

Great question. I have a few, in order of memory.

1. First gear Kilimanjaro jacket. A great jacket that can be worn in three if not four seasons comfortable versatile and durable. I also have a First Gear Scout brown leather riding jacket that I've had for 35 years. A fantastic weather riding jacket with multiple vents and scoops. First gear has proven itself with durability and value and is always where I look first when looking for new riding jackets or pants or boots.
2. Oxford grip heaters. Direct connect to the battery with movement sensing and voltage sensing provide safe reliable and excellent heat. I've added to every motorcycle I ride.
3. TPMS system - will never ride without one again. Takes so much worry out of the ride especially when varying road conditions makes you think you might be low on tire pressure.
4. LED head and tail lights. Saves on precious amperage long lived and increases visibility. I don't personally see value in LED directionals, especially when you have to add resistors or a special relay.
5. Augostini or Mistral exhausts.
6. Beetle Map and Guzzi Diag - not sure this would qualify as an accessory but I have maps on three of my five bikes and they have all benefited tremendously, and the software is the bomb.
7. StopnGo plug kit. The absolute best plug kit I've ever used. I have a kit in each of my vehicles four and two wheeled.
8. AGM battery - Again, not sure that this is an accessory but I have found that AGM batteries last longer and provide more reliable power than any other battery to include the view times I've used a lithium ion.

That's about it for now. I'm sure there are others, but these are ones that I will always use while riding whenever possible.

I am on my second. Between the two I tried Neotech ll and a Schuberth, due to reviews and higher cost I thought they would even be better than the Nolan. They fit well but very noisy compared to the Nolan especially the Neotech.

My Oxford grip heaters have been fantastic. My Vanson jacket has been great but took quite a bit of time to break in but no surprise due to the heavy leather used to make it.

My 25 year old Kerr leather jacket would be definitely number one on my list because it has served me well and has many many more years left in it.

A very close second would be my Hot Wired heated jacket liner. It makes riding much more enjoyable when the weather starts to turn cold.

In my million plus miles and decades of riding I'd put the electric vest on the top of the list. Easy to use and not much to hook up to another bike. Hands and feet cold? The electric vest heats your core.

For me (and the wife as passenger), the most bang for the buck is a custom-for-you seat.
For Guzzi "thrifty" content, move the controls and bars around to fit you.

The difference in making a bike fit you is incredible!

I've got one.  Much better than the thumb style throttle locks that usually needs adjustment when you need it.  The little clothespin has the thumbscrew for easy tightening and adjustment when you're on the road.  Throttle locks are great unless it's a hilly road.   It does shrink up the grip and pull it away from the bar end.  I'd give it a 7.

It was an interesting study in "drift".
Subject title:
Accessory (singular) you would rate as a 10.
Became multiples.
Became highest to lowest list.
Became critique of others choices.
Ended up as this commentary.

I got tired of the stock mirrors not staying in place, and having just dived into off-road / dirt trails, I decided to try these $18 Ken Sean foldable mirrors. I’ve had them for maybe 3 years and still love ‘em. Maybe only twice at most did they move at high speed, and I regularly fold them down when covering the bike up. Bonus—they look classic unlike the extra pricey DoubleTake mirrors that use the RAM mount system:

That reminds me:
KTM folding mirrors made by "FAR" 243mm
Have been running them around 7 years, I put them them on most of my bikes
They fold rather than break, they look a bit more classic than the DoubleTake mirrors, they're good at vibration dampening, and most importantly they hold their place! My OE Guzzi mirrors kept coming loose and flopping around, thought I was going to break them with frequent re-tightening so I just replaced them.
They are the 4th ones down in this photo:

(https://i.ibb.co/1dxT3JJ/far-mirrors.jpg) (https://ibb.co/1dxT3JJ)

Free gas station diesel mitts, and bread bags or grocery bags
I try to keep them single use.
The price is right and they turn cheap protective gloves and boots into comfy warm ones in the wet and cold.

NoNoise ear plugs
Found them maybe 3 years ago and now keep a pair on each keychain.
They filter a lot of road and wind noise while still letting you hear some, supposedly less damaging. I end the day with less ringing in my ears than without them, so they're good for that.

Ultimate BeadRider seat cover- $60. Have ridden with it for 4 years.

I originally bought it for seat comfort when I initially installed it. As I took off down the road, it felt like the seat was air conditioned! Air was flowing under my butt providing a pocket of fresh air flow with no more sweaty butt! Not only do the beads provide cooling, they add comfort with hundreds of pressure points that can be changed by slightly moving. I’m able to ride for longer periods of time before my butt gets sore.

Oldie but goodie.  Swannee or Harper repop fairing. Fugly function. Used one for many years.  Barring the Swannee, I really like the little spoilers that you put on top of your windshield to deflect windstream over the top of your helmet.     Next would be sheepskin cover for the seat.   I also am a devotee of the seat beads and/or the Airhawk seat cushion... I also like to carry a thick nylon NFL windproof sweatshirt to wear under my mesh jacket on cool mornings. It is much easier and faster to use than the liner that came with the jacket. Once it gets warm, roll it up and throw it in a saddlebag.

Yes..!
What was I thinking ? I did not include that one, maybe because it’s become so integrated into my existence, that I no longer consider it an accessory.
Good catch. :thumb:

When I was getting back into riding,I was gifted a used Rukka suit from a very kind gentleman,I shudder to think what the retail price of it would be,it's a beautiful piece of kit.

My Gerbings outfit is very sweet to have on in cold weather.

Most of my bikes have marginal charging systems for the Gerbings suit;iirc it was Charlie at one point that recommended the Kuryakyn volt meter LED battery gauge mod # 4218. It is extremely intuitive to use when I've got my Gerbings turned on. The gauge LEDs works with red, yellow & green lights. At high rpm with good charging, I can tell at a glance with 2 steady green lights I have lots of voltage power,as I slow down, come into town etc,as the charging rate drops, one by one the LEDs will flash then gradually change to yellow,at that point I just adjust the Gerbings controller down so I'm looking at solid green LEDs again. For the Norges,Grisos,Stelvios or any bike with an upgraded alternator, charging rate isn't that big a concern running heated gear, but for any other bike,if you're running heated gear,I highly recommend this volt meter.

When it came time to install the a/m voltmeter on my V11,I agonized over where to tap into the harness with my marginal soldering skills. I already had CTEK charger power leads from my battery in place so I picked up what is called a CTEK extension cord and spliced that into my volt meter leads,so I've got a nice neat quick disconnect without compromising the oem wiring harness. Little strips of 2 sided velcro straps keep everything nice, tight & secure.

I love my Shoei Air helmet (one of the few pieces of gear I bought new,not on Kijiji). The integral sunshade visor is worth it's weight in gold, what's really surprised me,was when the sales clerk was describing the neck skirt on the helmet to me,I thought I'd hate it and take it off;but it's excellent for keeping bugs and cold weather out.

I'm not a GPS gadget guy,I'm old school paper map,so I love my Givi magnetic tank bag with a big clear map pocket.

I don't think I'd pay full retail for them, but I've lucked into a couple of Air Hawk deals for bikes that needed more comfort in the seat dept,if the seat's marginal, they work well for me.

Not really bike gear, more in the tool dept; nothing puts a smile on my face like doing a full tune up on a bike and getting the carbs or TBs fully synched with my home made vinyl tube manometer and listening to how sweet it sounds.

I was educated in a one room country school and even I know that accessory is singular (that means one). If the question had been accessories (plural) then there is many items I would have listed from my many years of riding.
Looking back to the 50's when camping was a furniture pad and a 6 pack. The old heavy canvas tent and leather jackets that got wet and stayed wet for a few days. Rain gear was something cheap you'd buy from the Army/Navy store.

I can't list ONE item nor could I list my one my favorite road.

Have a nice day,
Tex

man, we're a grumpy bunch.

I think it's typical in motorcycle forums, especially in the winter, apparently pervasive in guzzi forums.

I'll amend my list and add a chill pill for a good sense of hee haw;

Highly recommend it to anyone who may possibly need to LTFU

I know others mentioned electric vests but for me going from an electric vest to my first Gerbing electric jacket liner with heated sleeves was a big improvement. Other than for short trips in mid Summer I generally have it with me because it packs down to the size of a nurf football.

Totally agree! Had an Eclipse vest for years and when it went south, I bought a heated jacket liner. If it’s cool enough for a heated vest, the heated jacket liner with the heated sleeves feels soooo good! Well worth the extra money.

I was curious how electric vests compared to an electric base layer compared to an electric jacket liner. I have a Warm n Safe base layer, and while it does a decent job, I wonder if something might work better that I don’t have to keep on all day.
