2002 Lemans engine into a 2002 Stone
« on: February 13, 2015, 01:28:06 PM »
I've bought a complete 2002 Lemans engine that I'm going to use to replace the burned up engine in my Stone.  I've read trough Guzzi Tech article on swapping a V11s engine into a Jackal:http://archive.guzzitech.com/V11S-Jackal-Todd_E.html.  It seems pretty strait forward.

I have the clutch that came with the Lemans engine, should it or the clutch from my Stone?  I know there were some clutch issues with the V11's around this time.

The Lemans and Stone should have the same ECU, correct?  I didn't get the ECU with the engine, but I'm thinking I should be able to flash a V11 tune onto mine if I get a Guzzidag.

Is there anything else I should watch out for when doing the swap?

As long as you have the dual plate V11S clutch, go with that. It's quite a bit lighter.

Lemans and stone ecus are 15M, but the chip is printed differently.  I've looked at the maps for both.  In addition to some fueling differences, the ignition initial and full advance is also different.  FWIW, I had a severe rough spot at about 2800 - 3200 rpm and some bad behavior on abrupt roll-off with the cali (stone) ecu in my hydro.  It was suggested that the ecu was the culprit, so I swapped it for the lemans-labeled one (there is a guzzi sticker over the marelli sticker saying it's a lemans/cali/sport/whatever) and the problem became manageable.  Not completely gone, but manageable.

Are you going to install the engine with the broad sump and oil cooler...?

The fellow that I bought the Jackal engine from to replace the cooked engine that I acquired

 http://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=70349.0

supplied the engine with the broad sump stating that he did not want to fabricate brackets and engineer the routing of the lines for the cooler, even though Todd had done it and laid out the plan pretty well.

I used the oil pan from the dead engine and now have a spare broad sump that I do not need.

Have fun with the swap...

Best,
Roib

I bought the oil cooler and lines with the engine and was thinking about using them.  From Todd's article it looks like I just have to fab some cooler mounts.

Hi,
I'm looking for a V11 timing cover, and sounds like you won't need yours for the engine swap.  Please pm or email me if you are willing to sell it.  Thanks :)

The V11 engine is from a 2002 Tenni and appears to have the exploding single plate clutch. It looks like I'll be reusing the clutch from the Stone.

Being a 2002 it also has the bubbling paint engine paint like my Stone, so I'm planning to repaint the case before bolting the engine in.  Any tips on how to remove the bubbling paint?

aircraft stripper is a good chemical process you can do at home (Note 'aircraft stripper' not 'paint stripper')  It's available at any auto paint shop.   Otherwise bead/soda blasting  :)
