Title: G5 Tires???
Post by: Dan Beaman on April 19, 2021, 08:14:07 PM
My '81 G5 requires 110/90, 18 rear tire. Currently I have the Metzler ME880 Marathon. I can find that model in that size ANYWHERE!! Ideas???

I went with IRC Duros for my G5 spoke wheels Dan. They look pretty good but I haven’t used them yet. I have used the IRC tubes for years and like them.

Ditto on Chucks input.

I'm using the AVON AM 26 on my 76 Convert .

Great results.

I usually order from American Moto Tire.

But the last time I looked the 110/90/18 were our of stock.

Their prices are great  so search the site they have plenty of choices

I'm running 100/90 front and 120/90 rear on my Convert. The Shinko 230 Tourmaster is my go to tire now on big Tontis and Loops.

Ya'll always come through!! I used to use the Avons so I'll look at those. I wondered about going 120 on the size and was going to ask that. I think the Marathon can be found in that size. I've gotten the best longevity from the Metzlers. A LONG time ago, I used Conti twins. Don't remember why I switched....

Spoon on some knobbies - the hipsters will approve!

But seriously, I've had great success with several different Shinko tires. They're a great value and I've never had an issue with one. Just choose the pattern you like and go from there. The 777 can be had in a reinforced tire while my personal favorite for the street is Verge 016 - similar to the early Pilot

Back in the '90s I used the Conti Blitz or Conti Tour, both excellent tires. The 230 Tourmasters are very much like those in every respect - reasonably priced, decent tread life, excellent traction wet or dry, easy to mount. The Bridgestone S11 Spitfire is another tire that I use on Tontis and Loops - slightly better tread life and only $40 more per pair usually.

My convert has been running the same sizes for at least 15 years.

Of course I've only had it for 1 year :-) the date stamp on the tires went back to 2003...... No dry rotting or cracks and plenty of tread left, but I figured it was time to replace them.

I replaced the Bridgestone bt45s with Pirelli Route 66. Not sure how they ride yet I'm still waiting to get the tires from the shop.

I wonder why the Dunlops don’t get any love here?

They list a D404 in 110/90 18, front and rear

Nobody running those?

Hey Chuck, I copied over my response to you in the other tire thread radial or Bias for Tontis, fyi

I had a pair of those put on my CX because it was the only option available to me from the dealer doing the safety check at the time.

I wouldn't do it again, they've never let me down, but if my judgement is correct, I think they ride stiff even aired down and I know I'll never wear them out.

For my G5, they might be more suitable, longer life, slower pace etc, but I regret having them on my CX, they'll be in the garbage long before I wear them out. fwiw

You are not the only one. I run D404 on my Cali1100. Got them dirt cheap ( about 120 for both) a couple years ago on Ebay. They are wearing as well as the old  Metzeler Marathons  it replaced and seem to be better handlers at least for a heavy bike such as mine.
