Convert speedo cable
« on: July 22, 2021, 09:40:45 AM »
Ok I thought this was a simple fix but the speedometer cable broke on yesterday's ride, it is the new to me 77convert, I took the cable off the speedometer and removed the knurled? nut off the trans, move the rear wheel and it will spin there but not up top, so somewhere in the housing it broke, my question is how to remove it at the transmission? Is there a trick to it? I have not touched the nut that goes into the trans, sorry for the long question but I could not find anything about this that seemed so simple to replace and I don't want to remove that nut and something goes wrong. Thanks for any advice.

It should come strait up after loosing cable hold down and the tightening bush, might be rusted in place. Pull up hard w/pliers. It's just like a G5 or 5spd.

I would not remove that "nut" (speedometer drive body) - a hardened washer could come adrift and drop into the transmission. Unscrew the knurled nut, pull the cable up and out.

Perhaps it wasn't fully engaged at both ends?

When my Bro put his 5 speed back together he left out the ball bearing that engages the drive cog on the output shaft, the speedo wouldn't always work after that.
If your inner cable has chewed off you should be able to source a repair kit.

Try giving the knurled nut and extra 1/2 turn with your tongue sticking out …I’ve fixed a broken vert speedometer that way…just check before purchasing a new one

Thanks guys, I got the ends off but the one on the trans I wasn't sure about since I read about a washer dropping down, I pulled the cable from the speedometer end to make sure it was the cable and pulled it out of the housing to make sure it was broke, I got a new cable coming so everything should be good.  :boozing:

Ok so I've had the cable soaking in aero kroil for a day or better and grabbed my pliers and gave it a tug and nothing so I gave a little harder tug and nothing, so I gave it a almighty tug and it let loose and I almost smacked my face with the pliers. LOL  :boozing:

When you are putting it back together connect to the speedometer then the transmission, seat the inner cable then raise it up a bit so it has room to grow and not bind up.Ron Tinkham taught me this trick years ago…

Old crusty ,rusty, stuff I worked on when dealers wouldn't & now stuff I bought new is almost there. Sometimes you have to use force.
I always coat new ones w/anti-seize. Longest lasting thing for winter type riding.

Well I finally got the cable in and put it on and it works like it should, no more bouncing around 5mph back and forth, I adjusted the neck bearings and no more head shake at 65 plus, now I'm going to replace the old Dunlop 404s .I think I have a keeper  :boozing:
