What is the origin of your user name?
« on: July 01, 2011, 04:32:46 PM »
I often wonder how members came up with their user names. Some are obvious, while others are a mystery. I signed up as 'r90s' because that is the first motorcycle I purchased (in 1976). I'm guessing there might be some interesting and/or enlightening responses to this post.

When I was 24 and began in a new job back in 1988, people seemed to find me rather old and boring so they called me FARFAR (Norwegian for Grand dad on your father's side) and shortly that was abbreviated to FAFFI. The name stuck for many years and I've retained it as my username.

Some time ago, someone posted on another board with a title of "I hate my Guzzi". This person went on to elaborate about the many troubles he had with the bike, many of which took very little time and very little, or no money to resolve. This was a very long rant. Many people countered with reasons that they "loved" their Guzzi, also going to great detail about why. At the time, this was the Mr. Nevada thread of its time. After being entertained for quite a period of time, I finally posted that every time I get on my Guzzi, even after the then 25,000 miles, and hit the starter, I felt like the kid in the Mazda commercial looking over his shoulder with a grin saying Zoom Zoom. It stuck. BTW, I still feel that way about my Guzzi's. ;D

As with Cloudbase, I am a glider pilot. Was having a hard time coming up with a user name so kept it simple.

Quote from Cloudbase:

So how do you measure that 500 ft.? I have had this problem of thinking that cloud is more than 500ft above and next thing you know everything is getting hazy. ;)

When I tried to sign on a Buell forum, years ago, the name JohnJ was taken. My best friend at the time was 19 years younger than me, and he referred to me as a Crusty Old Fart, so I tried Crusty, and it took.

My first name is Shannon, but it gets tiresome, having to correct people who seem to want to call me Shawn or Shane, or demand to speak to 'her'. So I use my middle name for everything. My wife is about the only person who calls me Shannon.  Been using my middle name for many years, works fine.

When I first got my Guzzi, I also had my '06 Ninja. Pretty imaginative, huh?  ::)   ;D

EDIT: Ah, that was the old name. Guess I'd better update.

"QC" = Quad-Cities.

Again, pretty imaginative lol.

My old Convert is a critter magnet.  I seem to squash something on every long road trip.  After the first few run-overs with it (possums, dogs, chipmunks, birds, etc) people started saying "Here comes Rodekyll" when I showed up, and the name stuck whether I liked it or not.

Back in the early days of the web, before Hotmail and the like, when I signed on with my first ISP, I was allotted one email address.  If I didn't include my (then)new wife in the new address it probably wouldn't have been a good idea.  So Randy and Annette, predating Brangelina, Bennifer and a host of other celebrity duos, became, and has remained, Ranette.

Oy, that hurts.

Testarossa = redhead = Ferrari tradition. There have been several generations of Ferrari 12-cylinder engines in V- and boxer configurations with red valves covers. See for instance

My story is quite similar to this one.  Before actually joining up back in the day, I checked out the board quite often.  There was a Vince in New York.  Since I was out in Phoenix at the time, I became Vince in Phoenix.  Moving back home, and ending up in Milwaukee, I am now my current handle.  Wonder what ever happened to Vince in New York?
