buy a bike w/out keys
« on: March 31, 2024, 08:42:52 AM »
So, if someone was interested in buying '98 / '99 CAli EV that did not have the keys, how difficult would it be to resolve?

Easy, they don't have a chip. Take lock off helmet lock or fuel tank cap and have one cut. Keys are for sale on ebay.

I always thought the helmet lock and gas cap were simpler versions of the ignition tumblers.  In that a key from another Guzzi might possibly open the gas cap, but wont turn the ignition.

Assume you buying as a non-runner and offer reflects that??

I hate locking gas caps so i modified a knob and took the tumblers out of the lock cylinder.  There are off the shelf options but last time I looked they were close to 70 dollars and shipping was around 25 for a simple knob.  That is simple enough to fix.  I never use helmet locks because I have seen too many people lose a lid to someone with a knife that just cuts the strap.  That leaves the ignition switch.  That year has no immobilizer so a replacement is easy.

Universal ignition switch available anywhere.  Take a test light.  Figure out which lead goes where.  Steering stem lock.  Security cable & lock.  Californias have a low rate of theft.
From the Deep Deep South out in left field.  There are no stupid questions.  There are however stupid people asking questions.  🤣, this includes me.  😉

Any number of dismantlers selling parts on ebay will likely have the ignition switch w/keys along with gas cap and seat/helmet lock. I'd check with Mark Etheridge at Moto Guzzi Classics first though. 562-986-0070.

The whole set is available new as well.

Yeah. guy bought a house and the bike with title and nothing else in the garage. ODO shows ~ 13k. He's asking $1100, I'm thinking $500 and I'll take the chance and gas for a 4-hour ride.

Go do it, that's a great year / model, and the mileage, even if off, is a positive sign.

That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.
