Tire blooming
« on: May 31, 2017, 03:00:25 AM »
Any experiences with prevention and removal? I've left my V7 on the sun for maybe 30 minutes the other day and both Pirelli Sport Demon tires turned ugly brown (except for the spot where they were shaded by shocks). I have Continental PremiumContact on my car exposed to sun every day, and yet they are still nice, black.

Guzzi got them. They are stock. But what I read... these are pretty good tires.

Go to Walmart or your local parts store and get some BleachWhite tire cleaner.  Spray it on the tires BEFORE they get wet.  Wait a bit and scrub with a brush and soapy water, rinse and your problem will go away.

what do you use for tire cleaner? I have that same issue with my car and my wife's car that are garaged. We have a SUV that sits outside year round as well as a trailer and that never happens to them. I don't detail the SUV or trailer, but use a wheel cleaner and a tire dressing on the cars that is supposed to not look shinny. the tires turn brown after sitting for a while.

kitchen cleanser such as comet or ajax, and a scrub brush will remove it. It may take a couple of applications, rinse well, and dont use tire dressing such as armor all.
I have also had good results using a  fine steel wool pad with soap used for kitchen cleaning such as a "brillo" pad.

Most of the discoloration is road grime and brake dust filth.

Actually, from what I've read, it comes from additives in the tire rubber to protect against ozone damage, and also possibly from mold release.

I don't trust any of these cleaners... except soap. What is odd is that this really happened in 30 minutes. What would tire be like if I would leave it 8 hours on the sun when I am at work??

Maybe not  much worse, assuming the antiozonant that's made it to the surface has all been turned brown by ozone made by the sun's UV in the first 30 minutes.  Be glad your tires have plenty of this stuff in the compound, because it prevents cracking and other ozone damage.

Early tires used to be white too. Those must have been a chore to keep clean!

It's a tire.  It touches the road which is dirty.  Get over it and ride on!!!

A 3M scrubbie pad made for Teflon pans with soap and water will remove the oxidized layer and not hurt anything. Many cleansers like Comet are gonna leave a residue behind.
yeah, I might be addicted to brake fluid. But I can stop any time I want.
