Gas, toilet paper, sanitizers, ammunition - there's a difference between being prepared for an emergency and hoarding. People hoard when 1) they are scared/paranoid, 2) selfish/narcissistic and 3) lack of trust that government and/or business is able to manage crisis and protect the public.

Consumption.....

A parts dealer friend in Dawsonville GA said yesterday morning that there was no gas to be had around him, so he doubted he would be able to make the AMCA Southeastern National in Denton NC this weekend.   This situation won't help their event.   I had a short truck trip with a friend for some bikes & a granite trip to GA planned for this week, but it can all wait.

When I first saw that first news report about "There might be shortages.." I thought oh crap... here we go... 500 gas cans later these people will be stuck with 200 gals of bad gas in a few months...   Its just dumb.

Just like the old “Bachman Turner overdrive” song goes “YOU AINT SEEN NOTHING YET BA BA BA BABY YOU JUST AINT SEEN NOTHING YET”

Yesterday day I lucked up and got the last tank left in Ash Co, where our river house is a 10:00 AM from a little country store near the house. When I called the attendant said that all was left was the Non ethanol at 3.70 per gallon. When I arrived 15 minutes later I was fourth in line. The pump quit at 20 gallon, enough for me to get back home today to Winston Salem, 100 miles away. 😡😡😡 is all I’ve got to say about this subject.

There is a major pipeline that feeds the east coast that as of yesterday was still shut down due to hackers from Russia. It was shut down last Friday apparently.

Yep, the state is dry. At least north of Atlanta is.
I passed a station that still had gasoline last night, with a long line down the street. An hour later when I past by it again, it was closed. I didn't see any other opened station in the area north of Atlanta. I had planned a trip to North Carolina, but that's not happening.

Before this happened, there were already reports of pending gasoline availability issues this summer due to a lack of properly credentialed CDL truck drivers to make local deliveries.  The panic stuff plus slow replenishment of empty stations will likely be a bad combination, even when the pipeline comes back online.  I'm just waiting to hear about some Bubba and Drunk Bobby getting tired of waiting & then getting blown up when they decide to tap a hole into the big line with a drill and a hole saw.....

I spent much of yesterday with no phone, no internet and no spare gas to go anywhere.  It was like being back on the farm- just go to work and have no worries about distractions.  Life has been a lot worse.

Never ever trust that gas station near TWofS to have gasoline. They have had money issues over the years and they are often closed down, even in good times. You need to head south to Dahlonega, or Turners Corner at least.

Pipeline hack.

People are panicking, so everyone is getting in line to fill up, emptying out the tanks at the stations.

It is about like the toilet paper thing from -. Next month people will have old stale gasoline sitting in a can that they forgot the bought.

Running a few errands this morning. Here in Northern VA/Alexandria. All stations have their pumps closed but two, even the little ones tucked in the neighborhoods. No way they are out, they are just preventing the morons from lining up. The one station open on Route 1 has a 1 mile line. I hope the guy who did the epic milk and bread video does one for this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6zaVYWLTkU

Gas was out or running out all over town yesterday at 3pm, every station had a line or it was closed.  When I drove to work this morning at 4:30am, both 24hr stations I drive by had gas and were open. An employee who left yesterday for a long commute to Brevard barely made it home, but after he used his lawnmower gas to get back to work today, he reported every station he saw also had gas and was pumping again this morning.

I don't think there is much to it beyond humans acting irrationally.

And why haven't the impacted state governments implemented purchase limits until this is resolved? Back in the 70's all the stations in my area had 10 or 15 gallon limits. Common sense stuff when there's panic buying.

Then again, maybe this is a ploy by the Keystone stakeholders to get their permit restored and the project going again.

It is frustrating that people behave in certain ways , spurred on by nonsense on the net and the media . It is the primary reason we are resistant to conspiracy theories here , one of the few places on the WWW where we argue over tyres and oil , and leave the conspiracy theories for others to debate

Hi all,                                                                                        5-12-21

Went to get my oil changed this morning and noticed the three gas stations across the highway...one was closed, one had diesel only and the third had a line of cars about 1/8 mile up the highway.  There were also three police cars with full lights.  Apparently, there was an altercation between a couple of customers that needed immediate police intervention.  Let the festivities begin!

I think this is why many of the stations in my area just put bags on their pumps and blocked with cones. They don't want the nonsense.

The problem with things like this, is that the mere reporting of panic buying gives reason to panic buy.
Like a run on the banks.
Hoarding fuel because you think others are going to hoard fuel, is actually very rational. Same with bum fodder, if you KNOW that the store will run out tomorrow, you are well advised to get some NOW..!
The initial panic buy is irrational, not the reaction to others panic buying.

I remember one time there was a hurricane in the gulf and we ran out of gas at every station in the area. It didn't knock anything off line or cause any disruptions, people just thought it *might* so there was a run on gas. Mind you media had nothing to do with that one. Just mountain folk mentality.

Bob, I just heard about the pipeline yesterday.  Have you actually seen people out there with a dozen 5 gallon cans buying up gasoline?  Or are people just topping off sooner than they normally would?  There were lines here in Florida, but it is probably people just topping off every day so they don't get caught without fuel when the pumps dry up.  That is different than hoarding.

I was in line with my bike for about 45 minutes and observed people filling up multiple gas cans and their cars also.  (More than three persons doing that) so I assumed they were stocking up on gas.  Maybe Im wrong, but after a 45 minute wait i came home.  Later that day the gas station was out of gas and the five other gas stations i checked were also out of gas.  Must just be a supply issue if people are not buying more gas than usually....

OK, OK...what do you think of this?  Like any business, their job #1 is to make money, not to sell product.  SSssoooo...what is to stop a gas station from simply putting plastic bags on their pumps, even though their underground tanks have plenty of fuel and simply wait for the price to climb another $.80 to $1/gallon.  THEN, open up at the new price and reap a windfall by selling the fuel that they have paid for (at the old wholesale price), at the new price!  They avoid they hassle of long lines, their employees get a couple of days off, and they are heroes for selling gas again.

How's that for dark side thinking?

Be well, stay well,

I have a lot of experience on this subject.
Fear in itself is a good thing as it keeps us from doing stupid things. That is unless that same fear is accompanied with ignorance. Ignorance is simply  a lack of knowledge which is also understandable. Fear and ignorance with the added element of stupidity is when major problems begin for people. This principle can be attached to anything from this subject is gasoline, to marriage. Enough said about that😂👍

I read on Friday when we were on vacation about Colonial getting hacked by ransomware. I knew it would be bad and I’d hit the ground running when we flew back into ATL. Hence why I haven’t gotten around to posting remaining pics. I’m only at home today bc I had had my second - shot and am feeling crappy today. So, here is what happened.

Colonial pipeline got hit by a ransomeware attack. It initially hit their financial servers. They shut the whole system down to prevent further incursion. Kinda smart if you ask me. Colonial however supplies 45% of fuel on the EAST coast. Especially the southeast. It’s a GA based company. There was no fuel replenishing the numerous tank farms that we load our tanker trucks from. The public started paying attention to the reports on Monday. Yes people started panic buying. Lines at stations like I’ve never seen (born in ‘76, don’t remember the 70s gas crisis) Stations were hitting sales records. The new Costco in Dallas GA was selling over 2,000 gallons per HOUR. Kroger’s were selling up to 1,200 gallons per hour! Yes all those stations with black plastic bags are OUT of fuel.

Remediation efforts. The national DOT has relaxed hours of service rules for gas haulers. Meaning we can work longer hours with less rest. Hey, we gotta do more with less. GA, and surrounding states relaxed weight requirements for gas haulers. I’m hauling 9,200 gallons of gas per load. About 84,000 pounds gross vehicle weight. (4,000 pounds over) there are still tank farms that are getting their fuel from unaffected pipelines. However, we’re ALL having to go there. You know the lines y’all see? Well we have to sit in line too to load our trucks. There’s more trucks than loading capacity. So that slows down delivery. Also, people are such morons that they will not yield their place in line to the gas truck who trying to deliver what they want!!!  :violent1: the reason stations will have gas in the morning is we run 24/7. Night shift drivers show up and deliver gas. Something else that is a consideration. Gas suppliers purchase daily allocations based on the average sales of stations. Smaller slower stations have much smaller allocations. When they run out of allocation they have to wait for the new batch of fuel to be pumped in. Usually at night. If the fuel is not flowing they cannot get fuel.

What the next few weeks holds. Colonial is restoring their systems as of yesterday. They are being deliberate and cautious. I personally approve. Once fuel pumping is back to 100% the process of refilling stations will be a slow one. Our industry does have a driver shortage. On average gasoline tanker companies have 20% of their fleet sitting unused because of lack of qualified drivers. It’s a hard job that requires attention to detail and safety. The wages at freight companies and standard trucking companies are equal to what we make. So really, what incentive is there to put your life and health at risk if you’re not going to be compensated accordingly. That is changing. Before the hack happened our company rolled out a 15% base wage increase. Other companies are doing the same. Yes this means the price of gas will go up. Cry me a river. Gasoline is carcinogenic and dealing with inattentive and/or outright aggressive drivers adds stress and risk. So much so that Sunday is my last day hauling gas! I’m out and not looking back. The easing of hours of service is going to make things even more dangerous. I want no part of it. Spotty outages will be par for the course this summer. But not because of a lack of fuel. It will be because there is no one to deliver it.

My street Guzzi had a weird problem, it would run around the neighborhood fine, it would run WFO fine, but at highway cruise it would die and backfire. A lot of things had been going on lately, I stole the carbs from the street bike for my Land Speed project only to get them back (with altered jetting) when a friend loaned me better. I gave up my Dyna ignition for the racer, and built up a dizzy with dual points and condensors. I was back from my racing trip, and was using the last of a race gas/pump gas mix from the racer in my street bike. So with all this, I had no idea what the problem was, ignition, carbs, fuel, or even ignition switch gone bad. I drained the tank and has 3 gallons of suspect fuel. When I filled my van the other day, I got a gallon in a legit gas can for the bike. I spent yesterday, changing out the entire ignition (used single point Eldo dizzy), I bypassed the ignition switch and went through the carbs. I also replace a leaky petcock. Poured the 1 gallon in the tank and took off. Headed for the highway and was immediately running at 90 MPH and having a blast. About 25 miles into this joy ride I realized I only had 1 gallon. I limp off the highway and beging looking for gas. Of course every empty station had none, and those with lines had some, but lines. So I decided to go into conservation mode (this is a convert) and I made it home albiet with some lean stumble and sneezing back through the carb. I put the 3 gallons of suspect gas back in the tank...

Strange.  When my local station was having a hard time getting fuel, the only grade they could get was 93 Non-Ethanol.  Now they have all 3 grades Non-Ethanol.  I guess you should have topped off in Tracy City.
