down but not out-- great Guzzi Crash bars
« on: November 15, 2019, 01:21:51 PM »
Riding the North Cascade early Oct. Great day, pavement dry --Then about to head (35mph) into right-hand, down hill, shaded turn-- notice Jeep in ditch on right side and on-coming cars flashing their lights. Long story short--ice and hardpacked snow---my buddy ahead of me was able to move to left of lane to avoid it--I was not lucky. Lost front wheel traction ( I did not hit front brake)--rode the Calvin down, and started a 25 yard slide into the oncoming lane. As the bike was heading towards the guardrail - I pushed away from the bike and slide approx. 25 feet on my left shoulder, hip, leg--- thank goodness for good armoured riding gear. Bottom line except for sore shoulder, I was OK. My 2009 Calvin survived, sliding on front, rear and hardbag crashbars,  as well as left side of H&H fairing. Crash bars are ground down approx. 1/3 of the way thru. Fairing has some gouges, toe guards damaged, fog light and mirror scraped.

I was very lucky, the Guzzi crash bars did their job, protected me on the way down and minimized damage to my Calvin.

My dilemma is, my Insurance  will probably want to write-off- I want to fix-- parts are either no longer available or back-order and no guarantee of getting them.

Can the crash bars be repaired? By brazing and building up ground off areas and re-chrome  OR does anyone have set of left side crash bars and left and right toe guards for sale

Any help will be appreciated.
Norm

Go ahead and let them total the bike then buy it back. You might have a salvage title but who cares. I did that and got bike for $1200. And insurance payout was $5500 IIRC

Yes I was lucky, I am 69 years old and been riding for 51 years--I hope to keep riding for a while.

We picked my Calvin up and it started right-up and we continued riding for 800 miles.

The dealer in Vancouver BC tells me parts are on back order and not sure when they will come in. That's why I was looking for some new or used used parts.

Parts damaged include:
Front LH bumper ( crash bar)
LH chrome frame cover
LH toe guard
RH toe guard
Rear LH bumper
LH support ( comes up under hard saddlebag and wraps around )
Fog light---- Chrome trim and lense

How do you buy back something you didn't sell?
Let them total it. Take the $ and fix it.
They don't buy the bike when its totalled. They pay you for the loss in value.
The title stays in your hands.
If you want them to dispose of the vehicle then you sign the title to them.
The buy back thing is a scam to reduce their payout.

It varies by state . In Oklahoma , and I think most states , you are required to surrender the title in a total loss claim . In effect , the insurance company is purchasing the vehicle from the owner . You then negotiate a buy back price , normally about 2.5 times the salvage value . In fact , buying it before a salvage company claims it usually results in a better deal .

So the legislators of these states crafted laws to screw the vehicle owners and benefit the ins companies.
Its your vehicle.

Btw, my SP II has been totalled twice-once when the original owner crashed it and had it repaired and then I was run over at a stoplight. Damage was purely cosmetic but enough for a total loss.
Ins co fought me but the adjuster finally conceded I was right. They only insure loss of value, not the title. I got full book value and fixed it. Title remained in my safe.
