Battery Recomendation
« on: November 16, 2019, 03:37:09 PM »
I’m looking for recommendations for a battery for my California II. I’m running a lawn mower battery that works great but I want to get something a little smaller so I can put the tool tray back in. I can’t believe how expensive some of those batteries are! Lawn mower battery $30-$40, motorcycle battery $150! That’s crazy. I was trying to think of the brand of the orange battery. Thanks

Kevin

^Get used to it , new battery technology is expensive ! And I might add , a much smaller battery than we used to use can crank way beyond it size . Peter

I used DEKA SLA batteries on the Loop and several Tonti' switch good success. I went to the local distributor and looked for the most CCA's in the smallest size. The battery was about 1/2 the size of a typical U1-7 battery.

Odyssey PC680 for that Cali, you might get away with a PC545 but do not count on using heated gear and aux lights...  The PC925 is overkill.

Buy them in fleabay from several suppliers, free shipping for right around $125.

Cheers,
Rob

This. BTW . Only these have lasted me 5  + years as opposed to other brands ( parasitic drains and crappy charging systems do not apply)

If you are happy with the price and performance of the lawnmower battery why not stick with it? Just get a tool roll and toss in one of your saddle bags. I don't use the tool tray in any of my Guzzi's.

I’m surprised you have kept any motorcycle long enough to need a new battery 😂

I'm a great fan of the Odyssey batteries. I've got 10 years on the 925 in my T3. I buy the biggest that will fit. Someone always needs to charge something at the campsite and my charge ports are always hot. Lost a rotor once. Rode 150 miles after a recharge on battery only. Ran one dead flat over the winter in Massachusetts (remember to disconnect USB charger before leaving for Florida). Put the battery on a Tender. Tender worked and two days later battery was back to normal. Put the same 925 in my V11 a couple of years ago for the same reasons I use the big box of lead in my T3.

It's a great bonus that these things don't spill acid no matter how they are oriented.

Just a quick suggestion.  If you go Odyssey I suggest you spend a few moments on their web site tech section where they discuss care and maintenance of their product including recommended charging system output and approved battery tender type products.

I've read all their recommendations and have ignored most of them. In spite of my ignorance I'm still looking at 10 years on my oldest 925 so far. So maybe their recommendations are just that, not requirements. I'm way past my best results with a slosh battery.

I use the East Penn AGM  batteries in all of my vehicles.  I'd switch if they let me down, but so far so good.

Dekka, Extreme, Duracell, AAA, etc matters not on the brand

It works fine,I guess I want all the stock parts for it. It isn’t stock where the motor is concerned, it has a cam, gears, Dyna ignition, and Dyna coils along with different slides& needles for the carbs. I still plan to do some head work & lighten the fly wheel. My favorite mod is the Russell Day Long seat.
