Darned my darn riding jacket, darn it! Added to my daily carry

On our recent trip out west on day 2 of 15 riding along my buddy point out the left elbow of my riding jacket had a seam that was coming apart. Fortunately that evening our hotel was next to a WalMart and I bought a cheap $3 small travel sewing kit and in a few minutes had the elbow all patched up (my 7th grade home ec class finally paid off) and ready for the next 13 days. Repair held strong the next 5000+ miles and through the washer when I got home. If I'd have left it go the jacked would have been rendered useless within a day or two as the wind was tearing it apart. Yesterday I was at WalMart and upgraded my sewing kit to a Fiskars travel kit for around $5 that now resides in the top case incase another textile or button failure occurs I can take care of it right away.

Never thought of carrying a needle and thread before but for the minimal space it takes up it's a bit of good insurance.

On long trips I usually carry a sewing kit that includes not only the usual fine needles & thread, but also sailmakers needles, a sailmakers palm & a sewing awl with strong threads & waxed linen & a lump of beeswax. It is used mostly to repair luggage along the way, occasionally camping equipment. I could repair a tear in clothing ( almost never happens) or re-sew a button ( perhaps once on the road. The kit doesn't take up much room, has come in handy on the occasion, so I'll keep packing it.

As for jacket liners, there's only one I have that works well - in a Dainese- made Moto Guzzi leather jacket. All the other liners I've had I've deemed useless, I usually wear or pack an ultra light down jacket instead, I find this a much more flexible option & warmer as well.

Did that type repair on my 50 year old Schott Brothers leather riding jacket. Then started thinking that if the thread in one section was old enough to fail chances all the other seams were in a similar condition.

I could no longer count on that jacket to protect me in an unplanned exit. Jacket went off to eBay as vintage clothing. I'll wear the newer goods with newer seams.

Even the cowboys of the old west carried needles and thread. I carried mine in my shaving kit?????
