Title: BMW R9T makes a nice platform for multiple models
Post by: ohiorider on July 29, 2017, 08:39:28 PM
I stopped off at the local BMW dealer today, and looked over the R9T lineup. Very nice.  I was especially taken with the Scrambler.  110hp (like the other R9T models.) This particular bike was equipped with the cross-spoke tubeless wheels, and several other features.

Makes me think that the Griso platform would have been ideal for Moto Guzzi equivalents to these bikes.

I was surprised at the posted curb weight.  Most of them were less than 490 pounds with fuel, if we can trust the mfg to give us accurate weight info.

Might have to sell off a few bikes and give the R9T Scrambler a try in 2018.

Still waiting for Guzzi to do a lighter big block on the CARC platform.  Might be a long wait!

Bob

I just read a road test of the R9T GS/Urban in the BMW Owners News today. It has the look of the original R80 GS. The write-up sounded like a cool bike. I guess you could buy an old Griso, spend some money, use your imagination and do what MG couldn't.

I owned an R80 ST for a while, and sold it to a BMW forum member in MA. I missed that bike a lot until I bought the V7 Stone. Same enjoyment, in a modern package.

I put about 40 miles on a R9T scrambler.  It was a total blast to ride.
It's not hard to feel that the stock suspension has been dumbed down a bit from the R9T but it's not a deal breaker by any means.
I liked it..a lot.

I owned the first year (2014) R9T and sold it a few months ago.  I suppose I bought it because I wanted something similar to my 2004 V11 Cafe Sport.  Now that they're both gone, I miss the V11 more than the R9T.  So many bikes, so little time.

I went into my local BMW dealer last week for a look at the R9T range. Nice looking bikes, all of them. I rather fancy the Urban. As soon as we get a spell of settled weather I'll borrow one for the day and hope that it doesn't leave me discontent with my V7. The cost of changing would be just outside my comfort zone.

Me too. I wish, Mandello had made the Stelvio in a version a little like that - or the scrambler...

Well, BMW is a vibrant and progressive company.  They offer motorcycles and are players across the board for all types of riding applications from scramblers, to enduro bikes to sportbikes to touring rigs.  They have a research and design department constantly working on introductions to come forth in the future.

I have been very critical of their dependability issues from my long years of experience with them but - I hope and believe- that situation is improving.

The motorcycle market is changing.  It is an aging demographic drawn to the frills and gadgets that BMW likes to offer. However, that market is dying off.   Bikes like the R9T series and now the soon-to-be-released F900 series are designed to appeal to a younger, less spendy market that is essential for continued growth of the Bavarian brand.

I give BMW credit and respect for their efforts. I would buy another new BMW myself.

I really like the R9T line (especially the "Pure" below), but that new 1200 engine with liquid-cooled heads (available on the GS, RS, and RT) is a really big step forward. On the other hand, the R9T models have simplicity, light weight, and a more traditional vibe than the 1200-LC models. I went "all-in" with an RS in the interest of high-ish speed touring out West. I know that electronic cruise is almost like cheating, but it sure takes a bit of discomfort out of a long day...

This one doesn't come that way from BMW, it's a kit for the Scrambler and Urban G/S.

The R9T Urban G/S is a standard model in the BMW Motorrad catalog. It is referred to as part of their "Heritage" line. The wire wheels are an option...

Paid a visit to the local BMW / Yamaha dealer today. They had five new, differently outfitted R9Ts on display or for demo. Dealer Claimed they had been selling well, and I'm inclined to believe it.

Most expensive listed extra seemed to be the polished alu tank, also available with visible seam as an additional extra...

If I didn't already have the Griso, or had to give it up, I'd give the R9T a serious test ride. Only thing I know that could put me off is that it doesn't appear possible to equip it with sidebags. A small rack that you could strap a duffle bag on should be possible though, which which is what I use on the Griso.
BMW sells a specially designed bag to strap on the back seat, which to me seems precariously narrow for that purpose.

Agree with others here that we're observing another missed opportunity for Guzzi. They should have been able to pull off something similar with the Griso as platform. Of course they'd need a working business plan to back it up, so it would never have sold much in any case.

I'd thought I'd revive this thread rather than starting a new one.

Fast forward a few years, and the R NineT is now Euro 5 compliant for 2021 and has been in continuous production for 7 years now...

I'm taking a test ride on the Pure model Tuesday.  Anybody have anything to say about these?  Won't replace my Guzzis but would replace the Honda CB1100....and by default the Griso I sold last year

Thanks!

I got a 2017 R9T Racer with only 200 miles on it last year. It now has almost 2500mi on it and I am learning to appreciate it more every ride. The motor is incredibly tractable and winds out almost like a Guzzi. Most Guzzis handle better than most BMWs, but the R9T series is very good: Nimble in the twisties, stable at speed. BMW has been refining their boxer series for a very long time, and while the R9T series is essentially a parts bin bike, BMW have some very nice parts to use.

I looked at the R9T Pure before I went for my V7III Special. I thought it was ugly in person and I read that the engines for that model are made in China and that was the kiss of death for me.

You were fed bad information. The 1200 boxer engines are made by BMW at their Berlin plant. You may be thinking of the current generation G- and F-series bikes. Those engines are assembled in China but after having ridden a Chinese-built ‘19 F850 GS in the Alps, I’d say it’s superior to the Austrian-built Rotax on my ‘13 F800GT. My Berlin-built R1200R and R1200RT have been faultless.

Thanks for all the feedback.

I went on the test ride yesterday, and the ride was nothing short of thrilling. The bike totally surprised me. It is so powerful, smooth, handles amazing, suspension was way better than expected, and fits me well enough (need a new seat, just like I needed on the CB1100).

The dealer is willing to take enough bikes in trade to cover the entire purchase price and then some....

Think I'm going to do it. Just have to figure out which bikes in the (overly large) stable will need to go....

Nice looking bike!  Haven't ridden an R9T (yet!)  This one (attached pic) would be a great stablemate for my perpetually young 1991 R100GS.

Probably a little bit tall and heavy for me at this stage in my life.  However, after having a black and yellow Beemer in the garage since 1991, this 40th Anniversary Edition of the GS series calls out way too loud to me.  Obviously not a GS, but an R9T in 'bumblebee" attire!
Videos like this on YouTube don't help, either.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZCwJyXok-A

I don't think I've ever won a raffle, but I keep trying!  The BMWMOA Foundation is holding a 20 bike raffle this summer ..... winners to be announced at the National Rally.  $100 put me in the running for one of 20 bikes.  So, essentially $5 a chance.

I looked hard at the 9RT back in 2015-16 in my search for a new naked standard. Ended up with the Griso.

It is a great bike, and I like what BMW has done with the platform and all the versions of it. Griso was a better fit for me.

Interesting, I had the Griso, bought without sitting/having a test ride, and it did NOT fit me at all...6' 4" and I was folded up like a cheap wallet, was lucky to find a buyer for it.

Apart from ergonomics, the R Ninet ran much better than the Goose, especially at lower revs.  The Goose did have a much more visceral feel however, which I personally like.  The Beemer was much smoother than I expected.

It checks most of the boxes for me. Would like a bigger seat, luggage rack and panniers to replace my 1200 Sport.
Tubeless spoke wheels, driveshaft, analog (style) guages, 5 gallon fuel capacity. More than enough power. I don't see many around Seattle, but maybe I haven't been looking hard enough.

I was speaking figuratively. The literal fit was not ideal, but knight lowering pegs and bar risers fixed that. I have the 4V 1100 motor and like it more than the 8V.

No, but the front of it is a leatherette pad that comes off giving a small storage space for gloves, etc. The hinge for the pad is notoriously fragile...so its essentially unusable (for me).

Well, I bought a R NineT Pure model, just a thrilling ride, but 4 weeks of ownership and 198 miles it is going back to the dealer.  Tried to start it for a ride today and nothing.  Deader than a doornail.  Checked the kill switch, neutral, side stand etc.  Just nothing.

On the very first day I rode it there was an error code in the dash, that pointed to a defective bulb.  Sure enough high beam was out.

Are these things always so high maintenance?
