"I had a Dyno electronic on a Guzzi, the unit failed, I did not have the stock points and instead  I bought a complete points dustributor on Ebay for $35...I cleaned the points my usual way of using a folded piece of 220 wet or dry abrasive paper.. Gapped them, installed in bike with two 3.6 ohm VW coils and Chevy condensors...I rode the bike and then sold it to Petrus Rocks on this site..He has ridden the bike for about 5 years and never touched the points.."

Well five years later I'm having significant electrical problems.

Last fall the bike would only run on one cylinder-Hmmm

The battery went dead over the winter

Bought a new battery, installed and the voltage regulator started smoking when I hooked up the battery and turned the key.
I was testing the battery and saw a sharp drop as the the smoke arrived.

The bike has a Ducati Energia alternator /regulator

I ordered a new DUcati regulator/rectifier, installed that. Tested battery voltage immediately upon turni9ng the key.  Same big voltage drop.

Started searching for a dead short.  Found said short in the wire going to the on/off switch.  disconnected said wire at both ends, bypassed the problem wire to the on/off switch.  Power goes to the switch, doesn't short.

Pulled the plugs- checking for the original one cylinder not firing problem.  No spark either side.

With the switch on-I have power through all the fuses.  I have no power to the coils.  My starter turns the motor over.

The bike has some rewiring so a lot of color coding is gone.  I have a color schematic for an older Cal II main issue is the alternator and reg/rect. wiring difference.

Looking for ideas...

If a kill switch isn't in use , make a lead from a fuse that's activated with the ignition on and wire into the coils, after removing the original lead
that powered the coils . Ign. on and test for spark ! Peter

If it was me I'd buy a new wiring harness from Greg Bender.

I've been down your road before and lots of time is wasted trying to figure out what the problem is with a likely ancient harness.

Power for the coils runs through the kill switch originally, I've seen that melt when under a higher load such as that of two VW coils. I always wire in a relay to handle the load and the switch then only triggers the relay.

Thanks guys!  I was considering running a new lead to the coils.
Charlie, pretty sure Tony put in a relay after the kill switch.  Maybe that is bad.  Tony was a great electrician but drove me crazy with using only black and red wires.
I have considered another wiring harness-may be in the cards ...

Black AND red wires?  What a luxury!

A friend of mine wired his bike using only black wires.

That was frequently me, (being colour blind) made it an academic exercise to use multi-coloured wires :) !  Peter

Sorted it out- poor positive connection to the coils
