Sorry to hear that. One of the greats. Nice mention of Lenny Breau in the comments. Three of the best dead guitar players you've never heard of all in one, sigh…
Great Willie Nelson classic, Night Life. BB did a great take on that, too.

I've always enjoyed his work, but I'd drifted away from steel guitar.

Fortunately, in the last decade there's been a bit of a resurgence in the field, led by Robert Randolph et al.

Thanks for sharing your talent, Buddy - you won't be forgotten.

Thanks for the posting.  He is and will always be the king of the pedal steel.  I grew up in suburban St. Louis, (U. City)and we use to hang out at Scottys Music.  Scotty's hosted the Pedal Steel Conventions and Buddy would be there almost every year.  We use to hang out at the store, and once Buddy was in town just saying hello.  He sat down to play and it was just awe inspiring. One of my close childhood friend played a gig with Buddy in St, Louis circa 1979, he was soft spoken, kind, and while every musician on stage was a bit petrified to be performing with the master, he was complementary and gracious.  Comparing his instrument, pedal steel to a lap steel or dobro is like comparing knowing some geometry to having a PhD in applied math.  The man was a genius

Wow!  I'm surprised at all the folks here who know of Buddy and/or play steel guitar.

Sad to lose another one of the greats.  His playing covered almost all forms of music.  Hearing him play showed me that the steel could be used for something other than Tiny Bubbles or country.

I've never been that great a player, and probably never will be, but he showed me some of the music that is still hidden in my instrument, and not to be afraid to play what ever kind of music I liked on it.

Last time I saw Buddy it was him and Albert Lee backing the Everly Brothers.  Great show.

His playing on Night Life and Ray Prices singing makes that one of the greatest songs ever.  Two otherworldly talents together. I miss them both.
