03 aluminum no ignition
« on: March 12, 2016, 07:59:24 PM »
ok what the hell gives, I parked a perfectly running bike and about 2 hours later a no start condition, not a miss, sputter, pop, fart, nothing just ran one minute then nothing.
I haul the thing home and start looking, it turns over, the fuel pump does its thing, but no spark, I cleaned the relays, swapped them all around checked the fuses.
the side stand switch is bypassed, the ecu gets 12v , the coils are getting 12 v but it drops off after the fuel pumps initial start. the ecu shows voltage at both coil terminals
( green and green/black). the kill switch seams fine,,,,,, it acts like both coils just crapped out but I doubt that.....
anyone have any clue, I gave up for the day because of frustration, you know the translation from Italian to English
about a week of this and it'll get the 16 lb computer repair kit and a new zip code,

Cam position sensor.
I believe it normally measures about 160 ohms.

Yup top left of engine.  Had this happen to my Jackal had a spare on hand and switched it out.  Voila it fired right up.  But between that and possibly relay issues I could not determine which cured my no start.

You'll more than likely have to have it sent from the UK or EU as it was a fairly common part on Fiats and the like.  I have not idea why these things go bad but its been mentioned the right angle turn for the wire just vibrates way too much and finally work hardens the copper wires.

would you happen to have any other resistance values for any other parts, say the coils primary and secondary sides ??????
thanks

at least this gives me some hope, somewhere to look other than the computer repair tool (aka 16# sledge)

Did you replace it (the cps)with the oem part or were you able to find an automotive substitute? At $150 a pop they are expensive. Always thought that there is likely a suitable sub but I never was able to find one or see anything on the net recommending a sub.

That was quick OMG, Sra99tch :thumb:
When you turn the key on a timer runs the fuel pump to prime then it stops.
As the engine turns over the sensor generates pulses which cause the ECU to re-start the pump and fire the spark

Here's a sketch that gives all the sensor resistance values, they can all be checked from the ECU plug (taken from my VII Sport)

Note: The TPS sensor is not a simple rheostat as shown, there are several different values, measuring the mV is the best for those.

when the first TPS in the 98 EV failed it refused to spark after shutting off to fill the gas tank. they all seem to fail slightly differently and at 13 years old you are due for one anyway.
