loop frame pinions
« on: May 01, 2021, 04:25:48 PM »
finally opened up the rear drive today and found that the pinon has self destructed. Couple of missing teeth.

crownwheel looks fine though.

its a V7 speciale so it has 8/35 ratio

I'm tempted to keep the crownwheel in situ and replace the pinion. thoughts?

is the pinion available anywhere????

Cheers

They are matched sets, replace 1/2 and it destroys itself. Look at MG cycle, then it has to be shimmed properly.
Then there's the metal that went somewhere, ground up through your bearings most likely. No cheap solution.

When I first got my loop back on the road at 150K miles there was so much metal floating around in the rear end I couldn't push it the teeth etc must have been laying in the bottom until I turned it over.
I ended up just purchasing another rear end, I think I paid $90 on flea bay, i'm sure there are plenty in good condition.

I needed one for a customer's Eldo recently and there were several on ebay, none for $90 or even close and only one that had decent gears. I bought it for $520 shipped and considered myself lucky to get it.

Lazlokovacs: I have a couple of good used Ambassador rear drives if you can't find one locally.
