Seal Nut Removal
« on: May 23, 2018, 03:00:16 PM »
Wonder if anybody has any tips for removing the seal nuts from a 70's Eldorado rear shocks. I have tried soakings in wd40, pb blaster several heat and cool down cycles and still can't seem to get the nuts to budge. I assume they are right hand threads and appear to be some type of alloy. Any thoughts?

I've tried to do it once and had the same issue. Heated the tube as hot as I could get it with a propane torch and it still wouldn't budge. I was using a Facom pin spanner with the two removable tips machined square. Maybe some sort of much longer pin spanner would work.

The tractor site really doesn't go into detail about actually getting the nut to turn, I assume ( Antietam ) that you were not successful in your attempts.

Nope. Despite my best efforts, I never did get those shocks apart.

Success
Had to build a very specific tool to fit the slots perfectly with an 18 in pipe for leverage, heat and an overnight soak with PB Blaster  and the nut cracked loose. Got both shocks apart and their in surprisingly good condition only 1 O-ring needs replaced. Plan on using them on an Ambo that is nearly all original.
