Western Adventure NAR, Ouray
« on: April 08, 2022, 07:46:18 PM »
Announcing the 2022 Ouray Western Adventure NAR!
When; Three nights, Thursday Sept. 8 to Sat. Sept. 10
Where; Ouray, CO KOA, 225 County Rd. 23, Ridgeway, CO
800-562-8026

This is a “do it yourself” NAR, meaning you need to make your own reservations for camping or moteling.  The KOA offers campsites and cabins, and the nearby town of Ouray has many motel options.  We will meet for dinner in either Ouray or Ridgeway each night, and there will be group rides on Friday and Saturday which will include the incredible scenery the area is known for.  More details will follow.

I know it is only April, but you are encouraged to make your reservations ASAP as camping reservations fill up extremely early these days.

If you plan to attend, please let everyone know by posting here.  If you have a reservation and would like someone to share you cabin or campsite, again post it here.
Looking forward to seeing many old and new faces!  If you have any questions or need more info please let me know.

Do you have a particular part of the campground in mind?  The map on the KOA website now looks different than the place where we stayed last time.

I have reserved campsites 50a and 50b.  If you are interested in being near the “Guzzi group” take a look at the online campground map and choose a nearby site.

I will be riding my V7II and will stick to pavement, and will lead the Ouray, Durango, Dolores, Ridgeway loop on Friday.  Others will likely be on Stelvios or V85TTs, and there are several good dirt road options.  If you care to research, one option is to ride Last Dollar Road from Telluride to Ridgeway as a “shortcut” on the Friday loop.  Another good option is to ride Owl Creek Pass from Ridgeway to Cimarron.  And of course there are dozens of other options in the area from the mild to the extreme.  We can keep this discussion going and see if anyone would like to lead a dirt ride or two.  I am not an authority on dirt riding…

Alan,
I will be joining you in Ouray. I don't know if I'll be on my V&II or the V85TT.

There are several dirt road routes shown on the Butler map.
From Norwood to Montrose, Sanborn Park Rd/Dave Wood Rd, 47Z/530/510. about 40 miles. IIRC two lane maintained dirt road.
About half way on that road you can turn NW onto Divide Road, 402, 81 miles to Hwy 141.  I took the fork to Gateway; I think it was steep in sections.  I remember the Divide Road to be mostly one lane and not regularly maintained.  PS: this is a hunting area.
I rode these roads 15 or 20 years ago, and not since.  I don't know current conditions except that Butler Maps shows them as Recommended Dirt Roads.

If anyone is interested, I would like to see if anyone would like to go in on renting a cabin for this. They are setup with one twin bed and a set of bunks so room for three. PM me if interested.

Booked site 50 for Friday and Saturday.  It's a few years since I've been there, but I remember it being a good time and I'm looking forward to it.  I'll bring the Stelvio but probably stay on the pavement.

I remember well the NAR Mike aka Rocker59 put on at Ouray a few years back, a great way to connect with the guys from your part of the globe and an excuse to buy a bike to get there.
I doubt I will be there this time though.

It was 2013.  Nine years ago.  Time flies!  It was a great time!  I'm glad Alan has picked up the banner and continued the series, and I hope to make it out there again sometime, when life isn't in the way!

I was there too, in 2013.  I was a bit late to the party, getting there after dark on the first day (had a slow puncture).
I remember Kiwi and Rocker.  We scooted down to Gateway with a bunch of the other rally rousers and visited the Auto Museum there.
I captured a photo of Rocker next to his favourite automobile.  Can't remember the model, though.  There are some amazing cars in that Museum.

If I recall correctly, the water cooled BMWs had just been released and there was a group of them in the Museum carpark that were undergoing journo testing.

It was a great rally.  Unfortunately, I won't make it there this year either.

Turns out the time I went was Rockers original, in 2013.  I cant believe it was so long ago, but I had a great time.  I capped it off by staying the extra day to go to Gateway.  What an amazing ride and museum.  I'm still telling people about it.

You can do it in areas of the national forest which permit “dispersed camping.”  There are fewer and fewer of these areas every year.  They are marked on the forest service maps.

Otherwise, I think Ouray has an ordinance against Crapping In The Woods.

I am planning on attending the Ouray rally again this year. After selling my Stelvio last year and being forced to chase everyone around at the Utah Rally last fall on my poor little Yamaha XT250, I have recently acquired a lightly used 2022 V7 Special being sold by Kballowe. Recent knee surgeries made the V7 hard for Kevin to ride so he listed it for sale and I snatched it up. Huzzah, I'm back on a Guzzi.!

Well we are certainly hoping to see that bike at Paonia at the Top-O-The Rockies here in about a month. That reminds me, I need to register for that.

KOA isn't too far from the town for some that might want a hotel.  Maybe 5 miles.  And Ridgeway is about the same distance.

Alright, I have site 51 reserved. However the gal mentioned that KOA corporate now owns this location and the corporate policy is that they can't guarantee a specific site? Whatever that means.

Looking forward to seeing you all there.
