Failed RPM gauge question
« on: November 23, 2021, 08:13:08 AM »
Noise started coming from my RPM gauge on my 83 CB1000C. I assumed, we all know the meaning of that, that the cable was failing. Even though the bike only now has 9k, it sat for years not even started and I figured the grease in the cable had got  hard causing the failures.
I order the cable and after installing, the noise was still there and within a mile the needle started bouncing all over the place.
Therefore bad gauge, my ole Honda mechanic diagnosed.

This is a sealed unit and my question is, does anyone know anywhere I can send it for repair?
I tried to find one but as of yet have not been able to locate one to replace.
Thanks for reply’s in advance.

You might be better off to buy a second hand tach, I'm sure there are lots out there.

One would think Roy.
I’ve searched the web quite a bit and only located one thus far. The pictures were good enough that I could tell the condition is not up to the standard I want to put in my bike.

I did find a place in CA FOREIGN SPEEDO and spoke with a gentleman who acknowledged they could rebuild it for 150.00. After shipping that would be a200.00+ project. I don’t want yo spend that much, especially for an instrument that I really don’t use anyhow. But I do want it fixed or replaced if I can reasonably.

You could also attempt a repair yourself.
They are a little hard to open but a tach will be quite simple inside, may just need some good lube.

You may be on to something Roy.
The gentleman I spoke with at Speedo said the same thing you did. He said a lot of time they just need to be disassembled and properly greased and cleaned up.
Thanks for the video 👍
