Any idea what this is
« on: July 02, 2021, 06:12:33 AM »
Found it in the bottom of the sump yesterday, posted the image on another topic but thought I would submit it to a wider audience. Looks like a staple, but seems better engineered than a normal staple. Could it be from timing chain tensioner?

I’m stumped. Maybe a sliver off of a big end shell bearing?  That would probably involve awful noises down below.

Its very soft material and non magnetic, maybe if it looks like like a staple then it probably is a staple. Just got the bike on Monday, I think I'm being over paranoid.

I had a small sliver of timing chain tensioner (lower hook) pass into the sump on my Eldo.  Eventually opened it up and found what was left just dangling there.

If it's non magnetic, probably not the timing chain?
Maybe something washed down from a funnel? Doesn't look like a staple

Looking at it more closely, it does look like its been shaved off something, certainly the 'roll' on one end suggests that. I was thing tensioner perhaps

Not a staple, those are hard and stiff.  I’d do the next oil change a little early to check for more, it’s probably just from  manufacturing unless it’s an old engine.

That sounds more likely.

I may be kinda noob to MG, but from what i seen recently of luigi's handy work, probably a bit of casting slag that got missed pre-assembly.
the fact that it was in tyhe sump and not the filter/strainer means it most likely came out of the gallery somewares.

Since you are a "noob" and all, you may want to refrain from talkin' smack about Luigi so much, you could "offend" some "Italian Americans" You may want to pick on Guido now and then

Thanks guys, I'm going with the manufacturing leftovers, only done 10000 miles, so probably not had a lot of oil changes either.

I found a 10 mm open box end wrench in the sump of a restoration project.  Had been in there so long that it stained the sump bottom aluminium.

Could be the remnants of an aluminum sealing washer from a dipstick.

Not pulling the engine apart at this juncture, it is malleable aluminium, so not from any major component that I can think of. Buttoned up and will do an early oil change and recheck the sump.
