Title: Vincent first start
Post by: Scout63 on November 27, 2022, 09:56:54 PM
Here’s a clip of the first running of my ‘46 Rapide today. It was a long time coming.  The tank was very heavily rusted. I had the magneto rebuilt and installed a Ducati type clutch in addition to the usual carbs, wiring, tires, cables and soft stuff.  Timing the magneto took me forever.  There are no timing marks, so you need to pull the exhaust and right side cover and use a piston stop and degree wheel. Starting a 1000cc twin seems like it would be difficult but is surprisingly easy.  Pull the decomp lever, push the starter lever down and release the decomp at the bottom of the stroke.  I still have a long way to go before I understand the bike. Now to sort oil leaks.

Hot damn!  Love it, Ben.  Great to see & hear progress.

There sure are worse things to tinker on over a long cold winter..

Nice, there is a very active club in the US ( and everywhere else in the civilised world) I’m just a bit jealous as so far I haven’t made the plunge!

As an apprentice I used to own a Comet, it was a nice old thumper,
I suspect some of these old bikes had trouble controlling their temperature, they wouldn't run all day in any weather the way a Guzzi will.
I think the Vincent would bake up if it ws run beside an old Guzzi twin.

Kind words from a humbling crowd. I feel like such a hack when working on the bikes.  Everything takes five times longer than expected. I can’t wait to get back to working on a big block Guzzi.  Those I understand.

A friend held a small get together during Street Vibrations in Reno. These two were there as well as some other interesting bikes.

Currently rebuilding an Ariel Square Four- totally understand the forward/backward of a rebuild.  Hope mine turns out as good as yours!  Now the oil leaks... my Velocette is perpetually leaky but better while my Triumph has been just a bit misty.  I look forward to seeing more from you Scout!
