A NEW LIFE FOR BSA MOTORCYCLES?

The big news is the Indian tractor giant Mahindra purchased the BSA brand in October 2016 with big plans to start producing BSA motorcycles again in India. Mahindra has been producing small 2-stroke commuter bikes and scooters for years, so this is their play to move upmarket. They certainly have the money, the technical and production capacity and the market reach to make it work.

This is good news. I wonder if they will make it to the USA market.

Interesting that the retro Gold Star puts out 45 or so HP, where the retro Enfield single is only 29 or so.  I’d be tempted by the Gold Star.  Putting together a US dealership network, though, is a huge undertaking and I don’t see it happening.  Remember Motus?

BSA is being developed for export from India, while Jawa is being kept for the Indian market. They are nice too!

And when they bought BSA they also bought Pininfarina, the Italian engineering and design firm, who almost surely had a big hand in the new bikes. Smart move on Mahindra's part.

Nice one!

And since we have a company here that imports both the Czech and the Indian Jawas, I have high hopes they will give us the BSA too.

I would certainly love to test ride it.

Cheers,

Maybe because the Goldstar is a DOHC 650 vs. a pushrod 500? There is no "retro Enfield single" in the current US line-up except the 350 Meteor.

Then again, one could just buy a MAHINDRA DI 255 Power Plus...and be done with it!!

What a beauty!  I hope it makes it here (U.S.) sooner rather than later.  It will be interesting to read reports about it that are yet to be written.

Charlie, I've checked with a couple of local RE dealers and they don't know (or can't say) whether the new RE 350 Classic will be brought to the U.S.  That one, although, it is only a 350 strikes the right chords with me.  I hope that we see it soon, but now I hope we see this new BSA soon too..."if wishes were fishes..."

This is the Enfield I was thinking of - 535cc, fuel injection, 29 or so HP.

I thought the new Gold Star was 500cc like the original.

Watch the early part of the video again....The CEO says it's a 650cc single....and will compete against the Royal Enfield 650INT series...

The Continental GT was discontinued in the US a few years ago.

Perhaps Mahindra will sell the BSA through Roxor (built in the US by Mahindra Automotive North America) dealers, many of which are motorcycle dealers already. Not a huge network, but it's a start. https://roxoroffroad.com/locate-a-dealer

I could not find any specs on bore and stroke.  I wonder if it's undersquare like the Royal Enfields?

Of course it will have a balance and electric start........it has no kick start! One of my Royal Enfield buddies pointed out the lack of a kick start. While starting my RE 500 single with kick is easy, I am also 212 lbs. A 650CC single..........I don't think I want to kick that!

The RE 350cc "Meteor" is already available now...

Very cute little bike for around town, but totally "ANEMIC" for the freeways...(IMHO)

But the Classic is not. Not everyone has to ride the freeways/interstate to get somewhere (thank goodness).

Agree 100%...and you can analyze it all you want....but out here in the greater Southwest...one has to deal with the reality of states like NEVADA....

At the risk of offending, I am not a huge fan of vintage BSAs, with the exception of the Gold Star.  The new one puts me in mind of the old Lightning even though that was a twin.  That just personal preference though.  I do like the idea of a big bore street single, but having ridden the KTMs, I would rather get a Husky or KTM that just rips and carves.
