NGC portable generator ?
« on: December 08, 2021, 05:11:53 PM »
Generac XP8000E
Seems like it's running slow and not making power. I suspect I need to clean the carb but there's a few things I don't know. Even if low RPMs should it make power to a 120v outlet? It's not.
I've looked on line for support but it's not that helpful and yes I've heard the Generac is a piece of S---. It's what we have.
I'll take it apart and clean the carb first off. Any other ideas from you guys? Or should I just drain the fuel and put in some new gas with seafoam or some additive and hope that clears it up?

Another thing I'm perplexed about, in the online manual it shows a twist lock receptacle like we have and it says 120/240 volts, is that right? How would it know what power to output? I thought a 120v had a normal home type outlet (there are 2 of these)  and the 240v had the twist lock plug.

     After starting and running a minute or so the control circuit should sense the load and increase speed to match and maintain the load. Some use governor control and some use stepper motor to increase the amps and volts.
      As for the receptacle, the opening with the bend in it  should be ground. The other openings will provide 120 volts depending how your male plug is configured, as in it will only need one prong and ground for 120. For 240 it will utilize two prongs and ground. Got a voltmeter to check it?

     N=neutral
     G= ground
     H= Line  120V       2XH=240V

Thanks RR. I did put a meter on the output while it was idling. Reading was jumping all over and never landed on a voltage. I'm thinking I shoulda checked amps too? I'll get back to check it out more this weekend.

you may not get a proper AC voltage reading at a low idle (not able to make 60Hz) besides carb and choke check exhaust and intake for dead things! also governor return spring can rust out or stick.
its not the end of the world...but you can see it from here!

Reset all the breakers, they trip if you look at em sideways and they must get fuzzy on the contacts sometimes . So far it’s worked on mine a couple times when it wasn’t working.

THANKS, my question is pending with the moderators before it posts.

Be patient, it takes awhile. Chris is the guy who answers questions on the whole house generators, but there are others. He works on them for a living, but it might be different for the portable generator's.

I think you posted to the wrong section as there is a portable generator section and you posted to the whole house generator section.
