Rebuilt carbs today replaced all vacuum lines making progress

Be careful you don't stress the speedometer cable putting it all back together, I did and now have another repair job.

Looks like you have at least as much enjoyment working on the bike (with your helper) as riding it  :grin:

Looking at the speedo cable arched up like that it might pay you to make sure it is the right cable.
I will have a look at mine tomorrow and try and get a better idea.
The cable needs to have nice smooth run so it doesn’t make the needle jump.

Been there... doesn't take much to stress out those cables and have them snap. Especially that bend out of the transmission. Doesn't hurt to pull the inner cable and apply some light grease
