Mapping software for Norge question
« on: July 28, 2021, 06:58:27 PM »
I received my OBD cable and 3 pin adapter yesterday and have installed Guzzi Diag on my Windows Laptop. Between the settings dialog stuff and needing to download the drivers for the cable I see that I need to know the motorcycle type for my 2008 4-valve (not 8) Norge and its ECM type.

Motorcycle types are shown as:

Norge 850
Norge 1200 T
Norge 1200 GT
Norge 12 GTL

ECM types are:

5AM ECU
15M/15P/15RC ECU

I'm guessing I'm the Norge 1200T with the 5AM ECU. Am I correct?

I have to say, getting the 3 pin adapter to plug into the plug on the Norge was really tricky. Cheap plastic junk plugs.

Mine is an ‘07 with heated grips and electric windshield with ABS, that makes it a GTL.
If yours has a manually adjustable screen it is a GT, at least it is the case for an ‘07.
Irregardless...(sic)
Yours is a W5AM ECU (like mine). I’ll stand corrected, but your bike won’t connect (digitally), if you enter the wrong model. Just try each one.
I cannot comment meaningfully regarding the 15 RC aspect, but mine is...(I think..).
I would go and look now, but it’s a bit too far away.

I had planed on downloading and installing the map for my bike from griso.org, aka Beetle maps.

That’s a slam dunk..!
My bike is the same as yours with Beetle’s map and has been perfect since the day Roper installed it.
No pinging, 4.8-5.1 litres/100 km @ 110 kph.
My bike has twice (under ideal conditions), done 500 km on a tank with 1.2 litres remaining.

I installed Guzzi Diag, the reader software, and the windows cable drivers, all for Windows. Unfortunately when I try running the reader software to download my factory map, the reader software says "Connecting..." for maybe 30 seconds and then displays the messages "Initialization failed", "Download was not successful" and "Switch off ignition for at least 10 seconds". I did wait more than 10 seconds and have tried it a few times since. Same results.

The cable I bought has a slider switch with 4 settings. I'm wondering if the switch is at the wrong setting. What do you think?

Lonelec cables are the only ones that have proven to be reliable...many other users have tried alternate cables and have difficulties connecting.  My Lonelec cables look like Huzo's picture, have never seen the blue one shown here.

Plus 1 on Beetle's maps...and if you change out your pipe let's say from Stock to Agostini, he can create another map for you that pairs well with the aftermarket pipe.

Hmmm, my cables look identical to the ones shown in the PDF guide (page 3) shown here on the griso.org site:

https://www.griso.org/GuzziDiag%20for%2015M-15RC-5AM.pdf

I have a friend with a cable, will try his. NC Dan called me with some suggestions (put bike in neutral), but still no love.

Just judging between the pictures,  it appears the switch is set to the higher numbers in your PDF picture.

Are you seeing the connection active , i.e. you've got a Com port connected?

I also make sure the battery is on a tender just to ensure full power.

Once those are in play, my Guzzidiag works...

HIghly recommend you download your original MAP first, save it somewhere on your hard drive, before loading the new Map...just in case!

Does your blue USB cable have the FTDI chip? If not, it won't work. Try the adapter test.

The time spend on wrong cables makes it a lot of time spend on forums worldwide. And lets people think it is all difficult. The one with the switches can connect I think, I lost what the swich has to be put in.

Look in windows device manager if when you put in the usb what happens.

Also on a  norge there a two diagnostic connectors, one with two wires going in is the right one. The one with 3 wires is ABS diagnostics.

Thank you PaulDaytona, and everyone else too. I had my cable connected to the 3 wire plug instead of the 2 wire. I am now downloading my original map. So the diagnostic cable works. However the 3 pin adapter I got won't fit the 2 wire plug. I'm using a friend's 3 pin adapter.

For the 3 pin adapter fiat adapter, you need the one with the long 3 pin housing, the short housings have to thick pins, they fit mostly if you take the red thing of the bike connector.

Here are pictures of the wrong adapter on the left and the correct one on the right:

I took my Norge out for a short test ride after loading the new map. Seems to be less cold blooded after starting, but no substantial difference beyond that. Will go for a longer ride to further evaluate. I didn't need to adjust the CO trim. It idled normally at 1,100 RPM and didn't smell funny like too much fuel. Thanks everybody!

Did you reset the learning parameters as well?  That's an integral part of the process to ensure you're starting off fresh with the system settings.

Yes, I did that and performed a TPS reset. Understand though that my Norge was running very well before installing the map.

I want to buy the correct 3 pin adapter cable. Do you think this one would work?

It appears to have the longer plug.

W/o being able to see the actual plug, it's a gamble.  Here's the link directly to Lonelec where I bought my cables 5 years ago.

I believe this is the one I bought. The fleabay one "looks" the same.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0053NRLHE/?coliid=I17YWE8C89P5Z4&colid=388FSMB9D1X7D&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

Unfortunatly they don't list the USB to OBD that I bought.

Before you use it, go to the Guzzidiag website and they have a wiring diagram for the adapter. They have been know to get the wires crossed one in a while.

I went on my first longish ride after installing the new map. Besides making my Norge noticeably less cold blooded, I can confirm that overall performance is noticeably better. I did 300+ miles of "spirited" riding on many backroads. More fun to wind up the the throttle and go through the gears now. More confidence in passing cars too. I like it.
