It certainly looked and sounded serious Dusty. It is what one might expect in a case of catastrophic engine failure, but we have a theory and it may not be that bad.

Had a good trip back. 'Lil Guz never missed a beat. Traffic from Timaru on was deadly, Triffids from here to kingdom come. In general they were dispatched two or three at a time and I am sure I caught the Breva grinning from ear to ear.  pulled over 6 grand in top a few times.   Fortunately I was being a law abiding citizen each time a  was present.  There were three on that section of road you said they did not normally frequent.  Incidentally, that is rather a nice stretch.

 Maybe it was just steam  Seriously , just trying to be supportive , you have had way too much trouble recently . Her is hoping your theory is correct .

Nope not steam. It stunk of burning oil.

And a heap of oil dropping down on to the gearbox. We suspect (read hope) something is up with the breather system and that when it appears to hydrauliced it did not bend anything.  From behind, it took about one second to go from a puff of white to a cloud that filled the whole road!  It was an impressive sight.
