Bloody 'Roos!
« on: April 15, 2017, 11:41:25 PM »
Just got a text from 'Clancy'. He collected a big roo up in the hills this morning. In hospital getting X-rayed now. V7 looks a bit the worse for wear. Waiting to see if he needs it dragging back for an autopsy.

You have Roo's, we have deer, farther north they have moose.

Any one of them can be a bad encounter on a bike.  I saw a video last year of a deer that was hit by a GSXR1000 on a WV race track at over 100mph.  IIRC, the rider survived, the deer not so much.

Very much like deer. Only stupider.

Sounds like he's got no broken bones so it could be a lot worse.

I know how he's feeling Pete, A few years back I was coming home from a breakfast run on my HRD and just plugging along quietly and an old buck and his squaw were standing in the middle of the road and didn't move so I stopped and waited until they moved into the scrub and was just letting out the clutch to go when a third one I didn't see came bounding out from the scrub chasing after the other 2 and hit me in mid flight completely missing the Vincent and hit me in the chest breaking 3 ribs and smashing my phone in my top pocket  and kept going.  6 weeks off work. Doesn't look too bad for a 60mph get off but a few shitty phone pics won't tell much.

At least Craig's OK, if no doubt sore.

Give Clancy our best and I hope he gets feeling better sooner than later. As for the autopsy? The roo or the bike?

Coming up the West Coast we have elk. The first one I saw on my trip was standing by the side of the road. I slowed down after that.

If you've never seen one up close imagine a deer the size of a horse.

Glad it's not too bad. Big animal strikes can suck pretty bad.

The Stelvio after hitting a 190 lb deer at 80 mph.

The best part of riding a motorcycle is to tilt the horizon and to lift the front coming out of a corner and to drift the back end powering thru loose dirt and to catch a little air topping a hill and... yeah it's all good!

A 'roo is stupider than a deer.  No way. How can that be possible?

Deer have a much higher nutrition diet and also have lots of predators to keep them sharp. 'Roos have a very low nutrition diet and few predators. Natural selection means really stupid deer stop being deer and become 'Lunch'. 'Roos put every ounce of energy they have into breeding, they're very good at it and can have up to three joeys on the go at any one time, all at different stages of development. Not being placental mammals they give birth to, by mammalian standards, very underdeveloped young which latch onto a teat after birth and don't leave the pouch for about the length of time a placental mammal's gestation period is! At the same time they can have a hopper bouncing in and out of the pouch and a third one in the womb. They also have the weird ability to hold an embryo in 'Stasis' in the womb. If food gets scarce for some reason development of the embryo is halted until better times return!

They are ideally suited to Australia's harsh conditions but having few predators other than man they haven't bothered using any energy to develop a big, wasteful, organ like a brain!

Yup, they really are *That* stupid!

Hope Clancy's OK. Let us know when you do. Canberra bloody roos! That engine guard took the brunt well. The Agostini version? Interested, cause I'll be in the area again next month. It looks like the indicator stem worked as designed on the LHS, but something else happened to the one on the right - it's gone.

Once it gets to the workshop I'll be able to make an assessment but it does look like its come off remarkably well from the pics.

I was thinking about heading out that way today on the Griso or Stelvio. Perhaps I'll revise my plan. I really don't want to run into that 'Roos bonehead twin!

Kangaroo meat tastes like lean beef.

Weren't the Aussies caught selling it disguised as beef in the USA years ago?

Thanks for all your well wishes.
I'm laid up in bed on Oxycodone and still hurt everywhere.
As Pete said, no major broken bones, just the tip of my little finger on my right hand.
And lots of strains & bruises.

It was just after midday when it happened.
Roos are normally only active a few hours either side of dawn & dusk.
So I avoid riding in the countryside at this times.

I was travelling at 100km/hr when the roo burst from the bushes on the right hand side.
I instantly knew a collision was inevitable.
Slow motion memory tells me I had time to grab the brake but knowing it wasn't going to do any good.
Then WHAM and memory is in fast motion.
The roo glanced off the front wheel and slammed into the right side of the forks, tank and handlebars.
This slammed me straight to the bitumen on my left hand side.
Then I just slid & slid.
Never broke free of the bike. Can't remember if I tried or not.

Never lost consciousness.
Realised the bike was still running and fuel was running from the tank. Killed it with the keys switch.
Started to assess myself, slid out from the bike and saw a car pulling over and the roo still standing in the middle of the road looking dazed but otherwise unhurt.
Got to my feet, decided I'd survived this one, and got taken to hospital for checking out.

Had to go back out to the bike at the end of the day for the insurance tow truck.
Had a better look at the bike then.
It's looks beat up but not as much as you'd expect.
The Agostini Engine Bars and C-Bow bags obviously helped to protect both the bike & me during the slide.
The big question is what kind of damage the roo did the front end & frame.

Here's some advertising for ATGATT.

Glad to see you're relatively OK Clancy. After living in Canberra, I wish thaat someone with some brains would authorise a cull of the roos around the ACT. Friends of mine who live round Michelago would often tell me that there were 9 or 10 dead roos that had been hit by cars each day. They would be cleared but there'd be more each day. I put Shu Roos on my bikes after a near miss with a roo at 120kmh one morning on the Hume. So far I haven't had a problem, but it could just be because I moved away from Canberra. Hopefully Pete will be able to fix your bike.

Horse meat was the thing in the U.K. Re cently  . Maybe Roo burgers on the menu at Maccas would help keep numbers down - they'd be jumping out the door.
