Title: 98 EV air box install
Post by: steven c on April 20, 2019, 08:17:59 AM
Okay while putting this bike back ( I didn't take it apart) together and sorting out my FI and fuel pump issues I never thought about the airbag and how it fits in there. I have been fighting with it this morning and it kind of looks like it should have been put back when the frame was crabbed. I thought by taking off the two intake tubes I could just slide it in but it's not working out this way. Is it just a matter of fiddling with it till it falls into place or should I start shopping for some pod filters? And would they work?

It's very tight, but it'll go in. I remove not only the tubes, but the rubber sleeves they slide into. Make sure the two small hose barbs/fittings on the left side are removed. It's best to attach the breather hose that goes from the airbox to the frame fitting just behind the steering head before you install the box. It goes without saying, battery out, 'box mounting bracket off. Even after the box is in, it's still a PITA to get the tubes attached, etc.

Theres a seam where the two halves of the air box are welded together, this caused a recall because the throttle drum can catch on it causing the throttle to stick half open.
I'm not sure if it was caused by the throttles moving back or the box moving forward but it's a bit startling when it happens.

The fix was to add a second throttle cable but it's hardly necessary if you are aware of it, I'm sure someone else has a better explanation

Is that the sleeves to the air box or intake or both?
Does the transmission breather run up along the frame or down under to that loop shaped bracket on the back side. Mines seems to want to go up.
The bike has two cables.
Thanks guys, good way to spend a rainy morning.

I remove everything between the throttle bodies and airbox - all the sleeves and both tubes. Once the 'box is back in the frame, then I begin reinstalling everything, beginning with the sleeves in the airbox and working forward. It helps to warm the rubbers and use silicone spray during assembly.

Transmission breather goes up.

The airbox goes in near the end, so you can get to the bolts in the top of the transmission.
I take out the tubes and rubbers. Then fight it. Spray something slippery on the bits and put them back in once in place.
Don't forget the frame vent line attachment, and the drain tube below.
(it helps a bit to remove the drain tube spigot, and put it back on after getting the airbox in place. But it isn't necessary to do that.)
