please help identify this old Guzzi
« on: April 26, 2015, 10:53:50 AM »
I picked up this Goose the weekend. Said to be an estate bike with under 9000 miles. Sitting a long time but said to run. Its titled as a 1970 but I'm guessing it is a 69 because the sidecovers are not vented and do not cover the battery. It has a four digit vin beginning with a 3. I think it is a 69 V7, but I never saw an original V7 that was not silver and red. This appears to be original paint, I can see the outline detail for the emblem decals which have been rubbed off.  The colors are candy red and white. Looks like the candy red was sprayed over silver. Inside the tool boxes are silver, but looks like a respray inside, dunno. I know that the Ambassadors came in red and white, but perhaps they made V7s originally alongside the Ambassador but then offered the same color schemes? Anyone know when and which colors were offered? Also if one could identify the bags, that would be cool!

V7-700 - 1968-69
V7 750 special 69-71
V7 Ambo  69-71

I think you have a 1968 which was available painted all white, someone put the red tank on it. or the factory put the red tank on the all white bike.. they didn't do things by the book then..

got this info from Mick Walkers MG twins restoration book.

I think someone switch the shift /brakes cause the shifter should be right footed on that era bike.

be aware the cyliner bores are chrome plated if original and will peal/flake and destroy the motor.. do a search.
can hope the PO already put on new jugs.

Looks like an Ambo to me.  Wixom bags.

Charlie should be along soon to confirm.

its a 69 ambo , i have one same color same year.

"Red" tank and side panel and white fenders are the stock colors

nice bike, check the cylinders bore.

Yes wixom bags, i got the same too.

the muffles are not stock, i am not sure about the carbs, looks like are the round , are they ?
The ambo had square slide carbs, V7 had round carbs ....  but i am not expert .

Yes, the carbs are round Delortos with remote bowls. I thought all Ambos had 5 digit vins? This one is definitely 4 digits, beginning with a 3. I'm guessing its like your 69 Ambo, but a V7

The brake pedal being on the right, shorter headlight bucket and gas tank says post A-series ambassador.

I think it's a V700.

Me, too.. although the right side brake pedal is a puzzler.

4 digit vin means V700. Maybe this was a leftover V700 that a dealer swapped tanks and body panels to clear off of the floor? If it was sold on 1970 that might make sense. Got any pictures of the shifter and brake mounts?

My old 700 had right brake/ left shift, not sure when it was done but it was apparently a common thing.

Left hand shift . . . Hmm I never even thought of that. That's nothing I generally think of since all my bikes shift different. I have some old Triumphs and Nortons that shift on one side or the other, and an HD with tank shift. My Eldo shifts left, so I never thought this was weird. Here is a shot of the left side.

vin # will tell the truth , parts on the bike could have been swapped during the years.
Can you post the whole vin # ?

Or if you go to : http://www.thisoldtractor.com/moto_guzzi.html you will be able to look it up yourself .

I'm calling "bitsa". Mostly V700 but headlight bucket, taillight bracket and gas tank aren't.

It doesn't have a police stand, does that make it a civilian model?

It looks to be in really nice condition, don't let anyone talk you into repainting it.

But it has the police dash.  The civilian model has a separate speedo & tach.   At least our `71 Ambo. did.  :)

They didn't come with turn signals until '72. I know because my '71, that I still have, didn't have signals. Mine sez it's '70 on the fork and the title is '71. Thought they didn't put the year on the title until they came in the US. Could be wrong.

I bought my '71 from Doc Storm in Grand Prairie, Texas. Had a choice of 14 black ones that he had on the show room floor.
