If I was a casting guy, what would I want to know?

What mold set it came out of - probably not a lot of those
What date it was made
What material lot went into it - maybe a priority for aerospace, but probably not a priority for a basic casting

If I worked with the Guzzi group, I'd want to know -

Which supplier it came from? Probably only one of those ....
Which guy built up the assembly?

I find the font difference interesting - could just be the stamp sets used ....

Sorry, too much time in the QA mines has affected my mind.   :blank:
That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.

All good thoughts.
The bike was assembled 06/1992. I looked for a pic of the engine number to see if that shed any light, but don't have on. I'll get it and see if it does. The engine # does not match the VIN but I know it is the original engine.

After looking closer....
Not sure what the first 2 #'s are.
The 4 sets almost all look like different stampings.
The 9 looks like it was over struck another 9 from another stamp.

Who knows what was happening at the factory at that time. It was pretty tumultuous with not much sales.
Just parts is parts off the shelf?

Ill have to keep digging.
I'm bored......Too cold to fire up the heat at the shop!!!!

Don't know the answer to your question, but my 93 Strada and 93 Lemans are both stamped in the same area, different numbers from yours, as well as a few other blocks that are newer than 93.  my 87 and earlier blocks are not stamped there.. The mystery continues....

Practices may vary depending on who's involved.

I spent five years looking at parts for centrifuges - GIANT centrifuges.

The place was ran old school, good old boys and bare minimum of details required. A lot of " that's okay, just go ahead, it will work fine ". And it would, but the print / test doc called for something else.

So I documented some of these decisions, required people to sign, and stamped that record number on some giant baskets like for top loading washers, except the basket was the size of a car, and the centrifuge was even bigger. I did not add any prefix such as NMR (nonconforming material report) to the number because any QA boy could spot that and start asking questions - I just wanted a traceability link back to the authorizing party in case the situation ever got ugly.

So those numbers may reference something to somebody in a CYA mode, but not be consistent across the whole generation of products or for all operators.

EDIT: My cow-orker looked at all the same parts/subasseblys/assemblys and didn't give a damn, so on any given day two versions of the same product could go out the door with/without said markings.

He went on to run co-gen turbines and make machined parts because he was bored with looking at stuff and wanted to make stuff - no idea where he wound up. Me? I'm mopping up after an external audit and wondering if I'll be the fall guy for management. Obviously, he was more clever.

Just saw this at Harpers.
http://www.harpermoto.com/crankcase-en-2-3-4-5-6-7.html
Part #  CRANKCASE USE 29000750 (#14000765)
Looked at all the others he has shown and don't see any others with them.
The #'s look completely different.

Doing a little more web surfing.....
Could it be as you said normzone, a protocol instituted by Dr John for better QC? Looks like it started around his time??
I wonder, and will have to look to see, if the tranny casting has any stamps.
Doesn't answer the original question but maybe one more piece to the puzzle.

93 was in USA the 1st year for what they called a 'New World Motor'. It had quite a few improvements like auto cam chain tensioner, deep spline clutch hub & plates, fuel injection, hotter cam and cylinders w/heads that need NOT to be retorqued. They were at 35ftlbs no mater what the manual says and continue to be that tight. My SP3 had the same stampings on it and you don't see it on other years that I've noticed.

When I worked for VW at a wheel manufacturing plant every wheel had a different stamping so they could trace it back to the date, casting machine and operator if a defect turned up later in the process.

Stories? Stories? Those are not stories - those are porn. This is how I get around the draconian restrictions of this website.

If you squint at them just right you can see the thinly disguised nudity. Try using just one eye.
